Reading rumours and speculation on the net I have come to this conclusion.
Sony thought they may be hacked at any moment and knew they needed to update the network asap. To do this they have to take it 'offline'. In deciding to do this over Easter weekend I think they have calculated that the extra stick they are going to get for doing it over easter will be forgotten. The only reason I can think of for that is that it is going to take a long time to fix. 1-2 weeks maybe more. This would also tally with them not releasing timeframes as if they said two weeks maybe more I personally know a lot of people that would switch to 360.
So there you have it. My theory is that PSN is going to be down for a couple of weeks. Maybe more.

Something definitely isn't right about their level of communication. I assumed it was because there's an inside-job element to this and they want to make sure they don't jeopardise their case by saying too much. Either that or they've found a Windows-sized exploit that they couldn't risk getting out.
I have no idea how online gaming works at the level we're talking about here, I would have thought that swapping over to a new system doesn't take this long unless something's happened to the original structure such as corruption or a hack.
It's probably as simple as someone forgetting to do a network backup the one time they actually need one.... it always happens that way.
