But then on the 1st of May they had the press conference which stated

So they've gone back to having no set date, although the headline does say this week but the actual statement doesn't. Strange choice of wording really.

They blog they released last night, which I posted above, says they're getting close. Which is good news to me.

As for it being re-storable quicker than this, it should be but it's turned into an huge investigation with the FBI, Congress, etc involved. I'm guessing they've had their hands tied by this so can't bring it back as quickly as they would have liked.

My problem with Sony over this is mainly the communication. Now I am finding out a little more, I am not convinced Sony did there job properly on the network in the first place with regards to security, but as you say no network is unhackable. That and I hardly have the knowledge to dispute what they say makes me give them the benefit of the doubt on this.

When it first went down they said nothing for days. Just Maintenance. They should have informed people about the hack immediately. I know several people who cancelled their cards immediately and would have done so earlier if they had know. This may be paranoid or premature but that is the choice of the card holder to make and not sony.
They then said services would be hopefuly be up and running in a few days when imo they must have known this wasn't going to take a few days. Imo they did this so that large numbers of there userbase would not switch to xbox. It would have been a minority but on a long easter weekend I know it would be a large minority that switched in the heat of the moment. I think this is a lot less likely now the weekend has gone and they have had time to calm down. All I wanted was to be kept better informed. They should have said it was a hack, details were stolen and this will not be back up for the easter weekend immediately. After the weekend, they would have known this was more than a few days worth of work and could have said the network would not be back up for more than a few days (they can word this). Again I feel they have kept us in the dark because if they give a big time scale people would switch.
The actual time down, while a huge pain in the arse. Is not what I have a problem with.

I would have liked them to be more open about it, but as they've said it took them a while to find out what was wrong/taken. It would have been better if they could have said "there's a chance that some details were stolen, please be vigilant" or something. If they had said anything about how long the downtime would be this would have been spun a million ways by the media, who did so anyway (but now have dropped the story as there's nothing much to it, it seems), but again Sony were probably unaware of how deep the hackers had got and thought it was going to be a quick-fix.

It's all speculation of what could/should have happened really. At least everyone's better prepared for it now, if it were to ever happen again.

im a ps3 fanboy as some of you may remember, but in the light of whats happening and with microsoft buying skype and the xbox upgrading the things you can do with it by the day im struggling to still say ps3 is better.

I hope these 2 free games we are gonna get are worth it

Still, I'm actually quite impressed with the games their offering, I was expecting 3.99 PSP/PSN crap. They've made an effort to cover different genres and the 2 i'd pick are worth £20 combined on Amazon, plus I have a second account eligible for another 2 if I wanted. Fair enough for losing a free service for a few weeks.
And to think I nearly bought an xbox.
