Default US - UK Language

Not sure if there was a thread on this before.

Thought it deserved it's own thread based on the wee discussion in the lol pics thread.

I like talking about this type of thing and see the differences between the langauges, hopefully discovering ones that I don't know.

So post!

One of the ones that I found really odd is how you all pronounce Adidas, and Celica(as in the car toyota celica)

This also, is not a chicken sandwich!! :P

Which was which? I say nee san, so I'm willing to assume that's the American way.

Does the complete change of words count in this thread?

Like lorry for truck, life for elevator, etc.?

Also off topic, but for Canadians: Aboot for about.

Of course!

American soccer terminology usually makes me go "wtf" like "he juked the player and makes the goal" O_o sounds weird.

Knee san just sounds weird. As does A-dee-dus (adidas)

The american pronunciation for Premier(as in the premier league) made me laugh so hard when I heard Jo say it.

The English and I think American way of pronouncing Graeme Mc Dowell's surname is odd to me too, it's pronounced Ma Dole here.(I think that is the proper way to say it)

Well juking is like faking someone out.

I find those pronunciations to be normal. How do yous on the other side of the pond say it?

Above goes for premier as well. I only see pree-meer as the pronunciation.

And I say is relatively close to my last name, so I say Mick-Dow-ull

God, you'd say my last name Ma Carin

So why don't you say Mick for that person's name?

Fanny - UK = down under, US = on the rear

Banger = sausage or old car.

If a bonnet is a "hood" then what is the roof of a convertible for you lot?

We say "350 zed" in the same way you say "350 zee." Z to an Englishman is "zed" whereas to an American it's a "zee."

I find Top Gear USA hilarious. Knee-sahn GT Arrrr. Mittsu-bee-shee Lancer Evolution I Ex. I want to hear one of them say "Range Rover Evoque" or "Bentley Arnage." Boo-ga-dee Veyron. They say everything foreign in slow motion as though no-one in America has ever heard of it before. Poor-sha Nine One One Gee Tee Three ARR ESS. "Boy this thing really handles AANNDDD it'll out-do a 'Stang or Camaaroo down the I-95." I would love for Top Gear US to drive something like a Lotus Exige S/Ariel Atom V8/Radical/Caparo T1/Caterham/etc. Also the track is commendably twisty for a country with no corners?

I suppose in a way it is, chicken inbetween a piece of bread, but I would call that a bap rather than bread rolls as you probably call them.

I would call that chicken in a bap or just a chicken burger.

  • "Homely" means ugly to Americans whereas it means cosy, unpretentious, unsophisticated, or unassuming in the U.K.
  • "pissed" means drunk. In America, it means very angry.

This one messed me up too. I was talking to Voodoo (Aussie) and mentioned I was making Biscuits & Gravy for breakie and he was like WTF why are you putting gravy on cookies!! Our biscuits would be maybe like a UK scone only unsweetened.

Aluminum and Centrifugal are the two Hobbs and I argued about the most.
