Default The 2011 Review Thread

As the year is almost over, let's hear some of your favourite, and least favourite, moments of the year. Whether it be gaming or life, films, TV, music, etc.

I'll start.

Favourite game of 2011 is definitely Battlefield 3. Really enjoyed it online, haven't really played the single player. Other games from this year,
LittleBigPlanet 2 was good although somewhat of a disappointment.
LA Noire, again a good game, the story got good at the end, but it did drag on a bit in the middle.

They were the biggest titles I played this year, other than those I really only played the F1 games, NFS Shift 2, MLB The Show 11, Bad Company 2.

As for other moments of the year, getting a moderators job on the Codemasters F1 game forums was good. Especially as I got F1 2011 (and DiRT 3) for free

So, lets hear yours!

2011 for me has been the transition from High School to College. It's crazy to think that at the beginning of 2011, even up until May, I wasn't sure which university I'd end up at. I'll post more later when this huge overinflated stress balloon which is my math final finally pops at noon.

also, good thread idea Plat.

Hmm this was a fairly big year for me. Let's see, Full-time job working on a multi-million dollar project, bought my first house, adopted a stray puppy, went to Boston and met Jolo and Campy and had a great time regardless drinking/eating at Irish Pubs, visited Sam Adams brewery rode my first Subway. Then things slowed down a bit then recently got a gf so that makes me happy.

As for gaming, BC2 got me through most of the year as Blops was just bleh, DA2 was a disappointment, then Skyrim and BF3 came out and sweet baby jesus absolutely love those games.

Got my first job which was/is stressful enough for me being the awkward introverted gobshite that I am. Made a very awesome new friend then something happened, god knows what and went months without speaking, strange.

Gaming, I enjoyed Black Ops for quite a while, got fed up a bit in the end, got a good PC for gaming, enjoyed/am enjoying CoD on PC, played a lot of FM11, enjoyed the tits out of it as usual. Didn't complete as many games as I should, I have plenty of unfinished games :/

I also managed to get every single GTA for a total of £5, I call that bargain of the century.

As for film/tv, i've gotten into watching more films and more genres of film/tv. Really really really enjoyed/am still enjoying dexter and psych, and I really enjoyed films like Brokeback Mountain, A Single Man and A Nightmare Before Christmas.

It's been a decent year for me following up from a horrible end to 2010.

Ok time for the real post.

2011 saw me bid farewell to my highschool along with most of my friends who went to U of I or other schools. Weirdly enough, I am now good friends with a few kids who I never talked to in high school... after talking about college with them thru facebook.

I worked over the summer for my father again, then began school... I managed to get paid by the University for an entire semester without working a minute, I had fun at the football games, I got blackout drunk for the first time. I raged (and still am raging) at finals. I met a nice girl, maybe I'll ask her out. I dunno what else to say. It's been basically a trimester: Screw around for the 2nd half of senior year, work & play during the summer, and 1st semester of college. It's been a good year, but I hope 2012 is better.

For gaming, 2011 wasn't too great. Zombies for Black Ops was good till about July. Got pretty stale afterwards. MW3 got boring after a few weeks. Most of this year for gaming consisted of GTA4 and its DLC's.

As for life in general, nothing really stands out. Got my guitar after years of wanting it. Talked to a girl during the summer, but she's become my closest friend since we've had class together. Got humiliated in the lunchroom (which my father oh-so-kindly brought up about an hour ago).

Other than that, 95% of the year was SSDD. Still been single this whole time.

Hoping 2012 turns out to be better, or at least more exciting or something.

And I agree with pants, this is actually a pretty good idea for a thread, though there's maybe 10 different people who are actually gonna post. This forum needs some CPR or something.

Excellent idea Platy!

2011 has been a challenge for me. Recovery from being laid off was tough but manageable, getting the divorce going was equally tough. Knowing that people are going to treat me differently from a financial or credit standpoint due to my bankruptcy also sucks. Not having my own internet has been just awful and not being able to buy the new computer too.

The highlights have been getting to know my boyfriend, having a healthy nephew, eating a ton of food and consequently getting a bigger butt (which is totally okay) and feeling better about myself and overall much happier than a year ago.

I'm looking forward to 2012 to be the year that I save up money to buy survival gear for when all the crazies come out in December of 2012.

Yeah you guys are boned. I sold my gun this year to put food on the table but anticipate buying at least one combo over/under which is a .22 caliber rifle on the top, and a 410 shotgun on the bottom. Handy for procuring your own food in the wild or to kill some motherfuckers trying to steal your food.

And this is why living in NY sucks.

But I don't believe in that 2012 shit. They could predict to an exact date when the world supposedly ends, but couldn't predict the Europeans would wipe them out? And how many end-of-the-world prophecies have there been? We're still here.

I don't believe it'll be the end of the world or any bullshit like that, but I do believe in self-fulfilling prophesy which is exactly the reason I am preparing. There are a multitude of idea's out there about what will happen (if anything) in December 2012, such as your traditional "end of the world, 4 horses of the apocalypse", the Sun sending out mega blasts of radiation that destroy our atmosphere (in which case a gun won't help me) and all sorts of other crazy talk. It is in my best interest to be prepared for a myriad of scenarios because I'm sure as shit not relying on the US government to protect me. If riots break out, I need to protect myself from other much more retarded and desperate American's that can't even hunt their own food.

Lol'd at the bold.

But I have to admit, riots are the only thing that slightly concern me. Most people I know don't think anything will happen, but that's only a few hundred out of the tens of millions in NYC alone.

It won't be something out of the Bible that kills us, or even megablasts of radiation from the sun. It'll be the fear of it happening, and the panic, paranoia, and subsequent pandemonium of the idea that it could happen.

For a while. And this would be where being a loner or social misfit would work to your benefit. Being alone most of your life would actually get rid of the threat of "going-crazy-because-everybody-you-know-love-and-care-about-is-either-dead-or-a-zombie"

That is exactly what I'm talking about. The subsequent chaos that will ensue is enough for me to be concerned. If the government is inundated with rioters, panicking citizens and the like, I'll need to be responsible for my own safety and procurement of essentials like food, water and shelter. Learning to live without the basics our government provides us is paramount at this point. I'm hoping that it won't come to that, but it's smart to be prepared, should even a natural disaster occur, I can rest easy at night knowing I'm as prepared as I can be.

I highly doubt it will, but like you said, it's better to be prepared and have it not happen than not be prepared and have the world go to shit.

Of which I am the latter. I can easily get food and water where I live, though I'd definitely find some other shelter than my house. Protecting those things would be the difficult part, since, as I said, almost all firearms are illegal in NY. Though if anarchy arises, that won't mean anything. But there are still very few places nearby where I could get even a pistol or shotgun, let alone a rifle.

Just realized this went from Reviewing 2011 to preparing for 2012

Nice thread Platy, and I love the transition to zombie apocalypse. Also nice to see some mainly positive posts, this forum is a lot more intimate than most I visit.

BF3 really is superb, single player is average but looks great, very short though. LBP2 was a real let down, more of an add on really.

This is where the sword becomes our friend. I have two in the bedroom (my fave being a katana with a lightsabre handle, fucking classic) and 2 bayonets in the living room (one WW1, one cavalry of unknown age/origin, hidden down the sides of my gaming chair). Got a bit paranoid of burglars since having kids...

Europe is teetering very close to meltdown in some parts, I'm even considering stocking up on tinned goods because we seem to be talking ourselves into it.

On a brighter note, I had a second kid in 2011 so nothing can really top that for me. My 2012 post should really be that I want at least one bloody good night of sleep.

Um, since we're talking about a zombie apocalypse, I still have my M4 in the basement, that I love to use.

Anyway, since all our posts were gaming-related, I'll throw in my views. "Giving up" gaming was a great decision for me. not having an xbox/tv in my dorm has helped me to concentrate. Also, it made me go out instead of staying in all the time. I used to be scared to do anything in public, now I have a lot more confidence in meeting and talking to people.

That being said, sometimes there's nothing better than collaborating on making an awesome Halo Forge map and playing 4 on 4 system link across the hall, or playing survival on MW3. We have an intense capture the flag map we made that's so much fun to play. Especially when rum is involved. I feel like I've found a good balance with gaming. I don't do it enough to really care about doing too well, but It's a great thing to have fun with friends on.

And to be honest online is cool since you can play with anyone, but offline with your friends physically there is just a blast.
