Basically you shave off the magnesium with your knife onto your kindling and then use a flint like tool to create the spark which catches the magnesium. I've not used one before but have been told and have seen on teh interwebs that it works.

Also Ghost is it similar to the ones in Chemistry class where it's like a mini pot with a magnesium strip with the striker next to it, and you squeeze to create sparks?

Essentially, yes. The only difference is that the magnesium bar I have is one solid bar you shave bits off with a knife, then you have a striker of some sort to create the spark for ignition. The Chemistry class ones are awesome since it's all encompassing, however, the flint tends to wear down rather quickly in those.

Well, we plan on doing some backpacking and camping here in WA state so we need to be well prepared for that. THEN, if shit hits the fan we will be as ready as we can be. The only things we are missing are weapons (though my brother is bringing up a couple of compound bows) more MRE's, couple of different clothing and shoe items and a -30 sleeping bag for myself.
