Yeah, I saw a similar article today, I was all "Awesome! Get my on the first plane there!" But then it's 20 lightyears away so right now this discovery means not much.

My bad, it's 20 lightyears, my zero key is broken.
20 lightyears is 11,756,999,600,000 miles, or eleven trillion, seven hundred and fifty six billion, nine hundred and ninety nine million, six hundred thousand miles.

Oh, that's not too far then. Isn't it only half way across the universe? Or is that something else?
Off topic; nice link in your sig, Dante.

Yeah that would be awesome, but I don't think my mind could process what a alien would look like. Or maybe they just look like smurfs or something haha. I am quite curious when it comes to science like this.

Are you a descendant of Darwin himself? Your portrayal of the theory of evolution paints an astonishing picture.

I'm certainly curious about what the native animals look like there and if there is any sentient life there.

if a planet has the same temp + elements surley there is a possibility that the same animals could evolve? And if that planet was formed millions of years before earth was COULD that planet not be "behind" us. Of course this is all down to probibility and the choices any dominant species makes on that planet Last edited by fenny; 10-02-2010 at 03:54 PM. |

If we lived in a super hostile environment then it is likely we would have tried to advance our technology faster in order to survive so if say the dinosaurs were still around and a constant threat there is a chance that we could have better weapons and equipment designed to keep us safe from harm. Also some of the things we use every day came about from a solution for a military need. Satilites are one such example.

There's no question there's life out there. But remember since it's a larger planet that it won't have aliens like we most likely imagine if there IS life. I would be amazed if they even found some form of microscopic life out there. Life is life and that alone would answer our question of if anyone else is out there.
Something that is awesome is that technically those scientists who discovered it are looking into the past by approximately 20 years. :P

Take the example of an isolated biosphere such as Australia. the group of animals that take advantage of the resources used by mammals in Europe are marsupials. Most of these parallels, while achieving the same ends, are as genetically far apart as humans and sharks. The fact that they've evolved fur, similar anatomies and similar behaviours is purely superficial when their bodies are entirely distinct. |

Our closest genetic relative on earth his a Chimp...and it's 98% a match, and the smartest chimp we know can do sign language (something we can teach infants). SO even if we did find a system with the same elements and dynamics for life the chance that we can even communicate with them is so small. I mean if that 2% goes the other way they could look at our Steven Hawkings and our Monet and our Shakespere as merely chimps doing sign language.

It's not even known what the atmosphere is made out of, so there might be foreign species living there, but we have no idea at all if we'd be able to live there ;p
