You could hardly call most of the people who believe this to be true scientists. They are just a bunch of people who see the end of the Mayan calender as a sign the world is going to end. This theory is dumb in it self due to the fact the Mayans would have no way of proving the world was going to end in the year 2012. The only reason the calender ends on dec 1 2012 on our calender is because in the Mayan long calender it resets every 13 bactunes (don't know or care if that is spelled right) and the date where the Mayan long calender hits the 13th bactune is dec 1 2012. To the Mayans the 13th bactune represents a great change in the world but it is not explained in anything scientists could find as to what this change is.
