First crash was mid game, screen froze, audio continued in background, had to force quit the game. Second was also mid game, only this time the screen went black, audio still present, with a windows error message "Fatal Error". Had to hard reboot as Task Manager wasn't responding. Servers were local with 50ms but gameplay was very choppy and laggy. My guess is it's my CPU but any thoughts are appreciated. Specs below, copied from Xfire page.
HP-Pavilion Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU E2200 @ 2.20GHz 3070MB RAM 490 GB NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT 19" Acer Realtek Digital Output (Realtek High Definition Audio) Sennheiser PC151 Cheap Ass Kensington keyboard Razer Lachesis 2 12"x18" Mousepads Windows Vista™ Home Premium I am rather annoyed simply because I've been stuck at level 2 and haven't been able to earn shit since the game keeps crashing. |

Yeah, the lag is probably because of the CPU. If you look around there should be some tweaks out there that can help.
As for the crashes, many players (myself included) have been experiencing them since the last "patch". Been waiting all week for a fix. :/ |

Go into your Event viewer after a crash, and find the report relating to it. Noting down the faulting module name should give you a clue as to where to start.

Here is a screenshot of the Event Viewer. Click for enlarged view. I'm posting this because it doesn't mean much to me since I don't understand some of the terminology.

I believe the fact that the application "hung" rather than crashed points to an issue with the system as opposed to the game itself, i.e. performance issues, not a file error or something.
Waiting for a patch is probably the best idea for now.

How will a patch improve anything if my system is to blame and not the game itself? I'm guessing my next upgrade will have to be CPU huh.

Optimization.
You really didn't think that question through, did you?

Don't you Eurofags spell it optimisation? And really, I figured patches were meant to fix problems with the actual game, not to improve gameplay with a CPU that doesn't even meet minimum game requirements.

Yes, but my spell checker on Firefox, even with the UK language plug-in, still has some trouble.
Your system should be able to run the game fine on low settings. Seriously, look at the difference between the release version of the game, and the patched version. The game can only get better after a patch, and if the game still runs as bad as it does now, then you will have to look at upgrades to be able to play.

A lot of work in patches/updates goes into making the program run more efficiently. CPUs & GPUs like to run flat out & more efficient code means it can get more done in the same amount of time. some patches or code is designed to run efficiently in a certain type of scenario (e.g. high frequency, lots of cores, lots of cache, lots of virtualisation) which is why updates can boost performance for some massively but not for others. It also accounts for why some benchmarks put a CPU twice as far ahead as it's rival, when on every single other benchmark they're near enough equal.

Well, I know some other people that are having similar issues but are running better CPU's so that points to the game being the problem. I have only played the game after the latest patch, so I have no idea what improvements were made. I'll try running on lower settings and see it that makes any difference.
EDIT: Okay so I hopped on and lowered the graphics settings and as soon as I hit the "Apply" button the game crashes.

Apparently this is the crash fix (some people have had success with it):

Rather than make a new thread I'll add to this one. I was able to load black ops single player so I can play it in offline mode. When I play it, sometimes the screen flashes yellow and it'll do that for maybe 5-10 seconds then stop. I also noticed when I ADS, everything is blurry and I can't see clearly what I am shooting at. I tried lowering the settings but it still does it. My GPU monitor shows the temp while playing is around 65-68C and the fan at 35%. The temp seems hig to me. I have the side cover off my comp too just to keep it a bit cooler but I am at a loss for what the flashing yellow screen is.
EDIT: after changing the res to 800x600 and then restarting the game I was able to play sans yellow screen and blurriness. I'd think that my gfx card could handle it at native res...is it still the cpu causing problems? Last edited by GhostHands; 01-17-2011 at 10:26 AM. |

65 to 68 for a GPU core isn't concerning. When talking about excess heat funny coloured lines or shapes etc is usually caused by the GPU's memory getting too hot. Don't suppose it also tells you how hot the memory is? (IIRC nVidia mid range stuff from around 2008/2009 didn't have memory temp sensors but I may be wrong)
35% fan speed is normal, but low. Try putting it on 50% or something. You can usually go to about 55% before you can hear it above the other fans, around 65% is the most you want to be running it without affecting the life of the fan, 100% whilst very cool sounds like imminent disaster! I guess these days it's done in the nVidia control panel. Crashes can also be caused by dodgy drivers. If this happened to me, I would:

It doesn't say memory temperature and there isn't a way to change fan speed in the control panel. Any suggestions?

try rivatuner 2 increse da fan speed. it got lots of complicated features but its da only ting i can fink of 4 higher fan speeds. RivaTuner v2.24c download from Guru3D.com (loving the massive "DOWNLOAD" adverts on the side, which successfully make you worry about what is otherwise THE most reputed graphics card website in existance)
wen u get it, strat it, u c on da main page there are bout 2 sections. 1 section is called "target adaptwer" n says sumting lyk "If you have more than one display adapter installed, you may select tweak target from the list below." Literally right beneath the drop down menu iz a box (kinda look like da forum quote boxes coz der a diff coloor) wid sum writin in it wich will say "G92b blah blah with 512mb DDR3 / make & model of your monitor here" or sumting. in the wright hand side of dis txt is a square wid a triangle in it. click it. pick 1st icon called "low level system settings." If dis dus no show up den i probably told you to click on triangle by wrong bit of txt. in dis case try clicking on the triangle-in-a-box further down the screen by da 2nd lot of writin n stuff. neway, once u click "low level system settings" click da "fan" tab. tick "enable low level fan control" and tick the circle called "fixed" now move da slider bar 2 werever u want it. suggest 60 as the highest just 4 testing. click apply (bottom of da screen) n go try 2 game. also look @ temps n see if der is an improvmentt., Sorry.

I've got riva tuner on my comp already so I'll give that a go tonight. Out of curiosity, did you type that out on your phone; I thought shorthand was beneath you.

Does anyone else get "insta-freeze" upon launching MP in offline mode? I was trying to get in and just mess around with the emblem editor thing and literally 3 seconds in, it freezes and I have to end the process via control panel.

I get an insta-quit if I start it in offline mode? (or indeed in online mode but without an internet connection)
