Default Multiplayer 'Record' function + the future of commentaries

It's a fairly general consensus that at the end of the Balck Ops multiplayer teaser there is a record function that will enable every player to record their gameplay, and it's a fair assumption that this will be geared towards those wishing to make their own montages/commentaries etc.
At first I thought that was a great idea, but having sat on it for a while and seen how Machinima have diluted the commentary scene, I fear it is going to be a big problem for fans of COD directors.
A couple of years ago a director had to be a great player. Recently the trend has been more towards being an entertaining director regardless of COD ability. In future thanks to Black Ops we're going to have to wade through a sea of bad directors and bad gameplay before we find those gems that are worth paying attention to.
I suggest flagging your favourites now before they get lost in a mire of mediocre 3leetSc0peZ messy montages

I thought some of the current games already had a record option (at least in the console for PC players).

hmm. i want to make commentaries, but am not the best player. but to be sensible, i'd probably only upload my best games, with epic k/d ratios and what not. hopefully people dont go uploading videos where they sit in a corner and end up negative :/

CoD games previous to MW2 had a function that allowed you to record a demo, and then play it back. This meant you could play with lower settings and high FPS, but you could then replay the demo and record it using a config to make everything look really good.

Unless the theater mode has a direct "Upload to Youtube" feature nothing will change. People will still need to go out and buy the hardware to record with.

The amount of bad stuff on youtube and the saturation of CoD montages/commentaries is already at the level you describe anyway, the time not so long ago where only a select few CoD players were on youtube is long since over. However, the amount of good material on the web hasn't really increased that much despite the vast number of commentators e.t.c. out there. Its still the same old guys that are consistently superior to the vast majority of newcomers, finding a great new director in this sea of shit is a genuinely challenging task nowadays.

MW2 GREATLY increased the amount of montages/commentaries on Youtube. I'd be surprised if numbers rose by as much again.

not at all. the videos will most likely be uploaded to the treyarch website or something similar, where the user will be able to download that saved file in god knows what format, and then they can just convert it and make a montage/commentary out of it.

Why can't the files just be saved on to the console's HDD?

Most of them do, IIRC. Only the "Arcade" version didn't.

Yeah, sounds about right.

Probably can do both. Treyarch tend to have an online section dedicated to the game, well they did with WaW.

Default Re: Multiplayer 'Record' function + the future of commentaries

Just gonna resurrect this very-relevant thread with an explanation of how CoD's record function (been in the game since Quake, the game that CoD was originally basically a mod of) actually works since most of you seem to be under the impression of this being a video recording function.

CoD's record function, when activated, essentially causes the server to save control input from the players as well as forwarding it to be executed ingame. What then happens is a completely accurate portrayal of the progress of the game (complete with freezes when the connection gets choppy as you see in spectator view) without a loss in performance. The file itself is only a few MB for a full-length scrim-type match so sharing in-game will not be an issue at all if the interface is provided.

Recording hardware/software will be necessary to upload these clips to Youtube or w/e as they are merely sets of instructions that are exeuted ingame as opposed to actual videos. All of the graphical assets are loaded via the game and, therefore, prevents the files from being viewed without the game.

I knew it recorded your keystrokes but surely it must record the keystrokes of everyone else in the game in order to know where they are when it reconstructs the game? Or is that just done by recording each players coordinates/FoV periodically?

I'm betting the only way to get vids on Youtube will be with recording software. Treyarch will most likely make the videos only viewable from the official BO website and maybe if were lucky from the game itself.

Edit: Missed that last part of ViS' post stating what I just said about Youtube vids. x.x

Did you also miss the part about the recordings not being videos at all and that they will be rendered using the game engine?

It's the standard CoD recording function (pretty sure Source uses the same idea) with semi-new rendering and playback options. That is all.

So, basically, the same as the "/record demo" in pre-MW2 CoD games?

I presume the PC version will regain this feature instead of using the same thing as consoles.

Basically, yes. Exactly the same. I'd assume that the revamps the consoles are likely to get will also be seen on PC simply for reasons of consistency, if nothing else.
