Default The Use of the N Word

NinJa: To solve some confusion, I took the posts in GH's Ask a Chick thread and moved them into the Debate section with a new topic. Feel free to debate and discuss here.

Does using racial epithets automatically make you racist? In the modern age when let's be honest, most people aren't hugely racist do these words still hold the same weight as they once did? Will racial epithets continue to be taboo words as long as one person still finds them offensive?

For example, no one finds "Cracker/Cracka" offensive, do you think the "N-Bomb" will ever drop to the level of Cracka? If so, on what timescale?

I hate the word, hate when people use it, regardless if they are intending to be racist or just being a douche. I doubt very seriously that it will ever drop to the level of cracker, simply because of the history of it. If it does, it'll be a long time. I've been called a cracker numerous times, and it doesn't offend me. I think it's stupid and childish to use words like that. I think calling someone an asshole is more effective and appropriate.

EDIT: I removed other questions/answers to AaC thread.

what about black people who call each other niggers? As in "hey nigger wassup?", not racist? or does it perpetuate the use of the word nigger as being more acceptable to use. I have black mates and white mates who call each other niggers same as they'd call each other dude or mate. What's your thoughts?

If one lacks understanding of racism to the degree at which they'd mistakenly attribute racism to words, they have no right to be commenting on racism.

There is nothing about any word that inherently makes them "racist". It's logically impossible. Context is all that matters and if you can't figure that part out for yourself, I feel that you should quickly apologise to society for the drain that you will inevitably be upon it.

Riiiight people mistakenly attribute racism to words do they? I'm sure if a white guy walked up to a black guy and called him a nigger he may think that its more than just a word. Why is it logically impossible that a word is inherently racist you could say that for any word and any conotation or are you just talking shit for the sake of it?
Obviously I realise its the context that matters but as it goes a lot of black people are uncomfortable with the fact that black people use the word nigger when addressing other black people, so how does that work? There is certainly no need to act like a dick and call me a drain on society when I'm asking a perfectly reasonable question. Go find a corner and cool down

A lot of black people are petty fools, then. If they'd just let such arbitrary (emphasis on arbitrary) and unwieldly social constraints go, society would save itself a lot of broken eggshells.

Do you understand? Would you like me to spell that out more simply for you? Don't answer this. Any response you give me will give me an answer.

Wow, can you get any further up your own arse? No really can you? I understand it perfectly but that doesnt mean it doesnt happen. They dont let these arbitrary constraints go do they, hence the problem. If people did this I dont suppose racism would be a problem would it? Simple enough for you? Dunno why you think you had to attack me quite so vehemntly, you got a chip on your shoulder about something?

Get your answer? Good you know what to do next.

Do you seriously expect me to be able to take you seriously after you've made a mistake as unquestionably elementary as a circular argument?

Just stop. I can't be bothered to waste my time with this nonsense but I don't want you walking away thinking that you're right either. Re-read my post, read up on the definition of "context" and consider the purpose of language and its tools.

You evidently don't understand "the whole context thing" if you can't even see when a word is being used in which context, as you've just aptly demonstrated.

If you look back on this forum's post history, you'll notice that this is what happens every time someone stupid argues with me about a serious matter. Please stop now and save yourself the embarassment and me the effort.

EDIT: Man the fuck up. If you can't take honesty, get off of the internet. Honesty is precisely why I love this place.

Vaguely speaking, there is two ways modern society uses the word, in two different forms. They are both one in the same.

Nigga: An ebonic slang term to identify their peers. Kind of like how English people say mates, and Americans say friends.

Nigger: Is a derogatory term used to refer to dark-skinned people, mostly those of black African ancestry. As an English variant of negro, it was once in common usage, but in recent times, in most contexts, it is considered a racial slur. Other definition is a dirty person, everyone can be a nigger by that definition.

Spoiler:
Context - 1. The part of a text or statement that surrounds a particular word or passage and determines its meaning.

Positive: Hey nigga, you want to go out and get some grub?

Negative: Hey nigger, why don't you get out of my restaurant? Your kind aren't welcome here.

Either way, the word is still wrong and as long as ignorant people still exist, things aren't changing for awhile.

Why are you intentionally misleading this poor, deluded man? At this point, he'll listen to anyone over me in order to save himself from embarassment. Why did you have to post something redundant and misleading in his vulnerable state? It's already pretty obvious that this guy doesn't understand the finer points of the English language so telling him that there is a distinction in definition (not connotation, but that may be arguable) between a slang term and its counterpart is simply immoral unless you're trying to troll him as hard as I am, in which case, get out of my house.

Not trolling at all. He should understand that I'm telling him that generally, these are the two most definitive ways modern society uses/accepts the word. I understand that the two words are just one in the same, one just being a slang term for the other. If he really thinks that they are two words then feel free to attempt to educate troll him some more. Perhaps I should have used a connotation example instead.

GH, do you own a wok?

That doesn't change the fact that modern society is doing it wrong. Would you rather teach someone how to do it right or how to do it as wrong as everyone else?

Fuck me all I did was ask a question, so I got the wrong end of the stick my bad. Vis are that aggressive in realife when you pick up on someones genuine misunderstanding or mistake? Amazed if you are you've not come unstuck. Just saying your original response to my question made you IMO sound like a cunt. I'm not trolling I just asked a question and your instant response was to put me down. Not real friendly is it.

We can all see Vis is getting stressy over this topic lol.

imo i hate the use of the word, but i also disagree that black people can use the word but when a white person uses it in front of them, and i dont mean in a insulting context, they go ape shit.

As far as the word, so many young kids say it now its really not as "bad" as it used to be. Like it doesn't carry the same weight as it did say pre 1960. All the time you hear white kids asking white kids or black kids "hey sup nig" or something similar. I dunno. Maybe i'm racist, but i don't think it matters anymore. People call each other fuckheads and it offends little, but they say nigger is offensive due to its history. Well, it's really lost its true meaning. Didn't the Brits call americans yankees as a derogative term, and the americans ended up adopting the term?
