Just purchased a Turtle Beach HPX headset, Astro A40 Mixamp, and TOSLink cable last week, and I have been absolutely blown away by the difference it makes. When I got the setup, my first test was a FFA match on Pipeline and it almost felt like I was cheating since I knew EXACTLY where everyone was at.

You don't need high-end headphones to do that. All you need are speakers that aren't positioned all the way across the room or integrated into your TV. Hell, a pair of low-end Sennheisers can do everything that Turtle Beach headsets can do when it comes to gaming.

The only reason I'd ever get a high-end gaming headset is for the style. Some of them look pretty damned cool.

Meh, all I got is my bedroom (I share a house) so it's easier for me to have axpros then set up surround sound. But ure right, well positioned surround sound in your room would work just as well :P I just happen to like being completely immersed in the game so my headset blocks out like 90% of any outside noise influences. I won't be able to hear by the time I am 30.

Surround sound fails for gaming, believe it or not. Virtual surround (via phasing) is actually far more accurate when it comes to establishing positions. The idea is basically something along the lines of you only having two ears. Things sound a bit strange when they're directly behind you (50/50 phasing) but sound perfectly clear from any other angle. Stereo speakers also won't force you to focus on a sound that's coming from the other side of the room and reverb won't be as much of a problem since you're going to be right in front of the source.

I have the Eurotech Steel Sound 5H 2V headphones with 7.1 surround sound I can pin point exactly where someone is by hearing their foot steps, gun sounds or that knee breaking sound ppl make when they fall from a building, BUT I can do exactly the same with a normal headphone I paid less than 9 quid for >.< I actually use the cheap headphone most of the time when I play games because it's smaller size, the 7.1 one does have a better sound quality thou it makes my brain orgasm when I listen to music with it

Sometimes I'll use my Shure SE210 earphones. They give a definite advantage over the default TV speakers, but I think any pair of headphones will do the job just fine.

7.1 will become useful for gaming when humans possess 7.1 ears.

Is there any major difference in the lower end headphones to the more pricey ones..?? I have Turtle beach PX21s (also had turtle beach X3s for 360) and I think they are great, look slick, great sound, chat volume adjuster, bass increase and I can also tell what directions people are coming from, the only downside for me is the cable but the difference in price is huge is it really worth it..??

No difference whatsoever. The only thing that headphones actually do is allow you to play at higher volumes. Footstop and gunshot sounds are actually situated in pretty much the exact middle of the frequencies that headphone-sized speakers can produce.

Sorry Vis, but I have to disagree... As stated earlier, I use a 5.1 headset, and it does make a HUGE difference... The sound quality isn't as good as my old Sony XDR stereo headphones when I'm listening to music, but you get a much better sense of direction using 5.1. I can only imagine 7.1 would further improve on that...

No, it does actually make a difference. I'll hear footsteps behind me to my left, turn round and shoot or stab some poor fool who thought he could sneak up on me, then I'll hear the sound of somebody reloading ahead of me to my right, I'll shoot through the wall and get a kill, then I might hear a grenade directly to my left and no which way to go to pick it up or run away from it before I've even looked...

Using 3D audio demos you can easily differentiate between each individual channel...

Don't knock it till you've tried it...

Default Wireless Headset?

I am think about getting a gaming headset and the decision is between the Turtle Beach X3s or Trittons. I was just wondering when I read that a headset is not wireless does that mean it plugs into your Xbox 360 or just your controller. I only am asking because I sit probably like 20 feet away from my xbox/TV when playing, so will a non-wireless headset not work for me?

BTW, would a standard Xbox headset(the one you get when buying the game) be considered a wireless or a wired headset?

I have the Turtle Beach X1s and the cable is very long also as it's powered via the cable the headphones are light. Mine plugs into the telly and the controller if I want in game
chat too.
