NFS has proper tracks these days? Next thing you're gonna tell me they've moved on from street racing and you can't put neons, speakers, body kits and turbos on a $10k civic coupe anymore?

Shift is the spin off series that competes with GT as a sim

I'm about 4 seconds slower than you on some tracks (ones you don't have a WR on) in a similar car (mines a little bit lower "rating"). I'm blaming it on the controller vs wheel.

All Records set with controller. Wheel only comes out occasionaly (small flat).

Are you serious? I would have bet a fair bit of money that you could never top the leaderboards without using a wheel. My F1/GT times are literally seconds ahead when I use it. I would bow down if I hadn't already fainted.

I've only got Shift1 and it's a fun game, I can see the series completely overtaking GT in the near future now that Mr Yamauchi has his head up his own arse. It feels great and they've managed to make it a bit more exciting than GT which always made me feel a bit like a test driver slogging through stats rather than a race driver chasing addrenaline.

I am quicker with the wheel, but to be honest on a lot of tracks I can be 'almost' as fast with the pad. 0.5-4 secs for most tracks seems about right depending on length and twistyness. Tracks like the nurgburgring there is no comparison really. The wheel is so much faster. Maybe 10-20 seconds. The main difference with the wheel though is consistancy. On the pad I am closer to losing control than the wheel. Rarely do I mess up on the wheel. I am not always fast but consistent. I have to restart much more when really going for it on the pad.

Went back to GT last week for a go. It seems sterile, easy and in some ways arcadey compared to Shift2. Shift was good but the handling wasn't quite as good as GT. Shift 2 on the other hand is better. GT still has good handling but the rest of the game is shit. AI is too easy graphics apart from the car itself are not as good as NFS, and as for the sound. There is no comparison. Gt sounds like a hairdryer. The Zonda on Shift 2 can make your ears bleed. On console this is the best driving game out there by a long way. The way the car gets unsettled when you hit a kerb is ultra realistic as is the way you can spin your car just by having the rear wheels on the curb with the wheel turned and you floor it. This is what is putting people off I think as they are used to being able to come out of a corner sideways and just floor it.
The only thing to compare to it for handling is GTR2 on pc (though to me it gtr2 isn't quite as good). I have heard great things about iracing an online only game but haven't tried it.

It feels impossible to make minor adjustments with the controller.

I mean on Shift 2. Feels unresponsive to the slight adjustments I try to make. Might be my old controller though.

^^^ah ok. Yeah it is soooo much more difficult on shift2. I can do little adjustments but every now and then doing these little adjustments is what causes me to lose the car completely. Most of the time I can recover but it costs me a lot of time but this is the single biggest difference (with the wheel) - being able to control the car when it is on the edge. This morning I consciously paid attention to my inputs on the left stick and it is pretty much constantly doing tiny adjustments. This weekend I will try and do a comparison test with the wheel for people.
