Talking US Supreme Court kills Video Game Law

While I think that selling M-rated games to kids is a bad idea, I'm glad that this law got shut down.

Supreme Court strikes down video game law on first amendment grounds

Don't see the big deal over this.

Games have age ratings, like movies, so why should kids be able to buy an "18"? Don't see them being allowed to go see an "18" film (without sneaking in anyway).

Most times I've either gotten them without the salesperson saying anything, or with my parents with me.

And with the rated R film, you can get in if you're under 18 assuming someone over 18 is with you.

Ratings are different over here though, that's why I don't see it being a big deal if a law is brought in.

The only reason it's a "big" deal is when you start pushing for laws like this, eventually people get it in their head that it's acceptable for the government to enact laws against other forms of free speech and expression. Video games should be a protected form just like books and movies. However, I still think parents and businesses should do the responsible thing and stop giving/selling mature games to minors. I don't think a 6 year old needs to be playing Call of Duty games just like they shouldn't been watching Saw movies in the theater.

They should make a $0.01 fee per game that you have to pay with a credit card. That way if your child gets an M game without you knowing, they'd have to steal your card to use it but you'd still see the charge. Of course, you can't stop it if the parents are okay with it.

FYI i'm just pretty much kidding, I know keeping R rated and M shit away from kids works just as well as keeping alcohol away from minors.

If parents took a more active role in raising their kids there would be no need for many of the stupid laws enacted to protect children, that's the job of parents.

Think yourself lucky you don't live in England. The parental standard in this country is atrocious. If Canada is half as bad I pity it.

Wait, you mean people actually have to take responsibility for their own actions? What kind of fucked up logic is that?

I know, theyre doing it wrong. I worked in a place where the receptionist used to bring her toddler in. When he got bored she would say "Do you want to watch tv", then stick him in his buggy in front of the cctv monitor. Kid was obviously used to sitting in front of a tv for long periods as it shut him right up

It ain't fucked up... As a child you are not responsible for your own actions that's why they have to be raised by PARENTS until they reach the age on consent. It's why children are not tried in adult courts of law for adult crimes. That's why statutory rape laws are in place because young children can't consent to have sex with an adult... and the list goes on...

Some guy on the radio said it today... some "mothers" association said the ruling was BS basically because we need to protect our children from violence and blah blah... the guy was saying, "hey 'mothers association' maybe you oughta like raise your damn kids rather than having the gov't regulate everything"

Completely off topic, but this sounds a lot like how some people are reacting to gay marriage being legalized in NY.

The difference with that becomes a religious one that gay people are damned to hell etc. I really don't want to get into that but I'm not seeing too much a connection.
