Spec Ops: The Line has a bit of an uphill battle already. The name "
Spec Ops" already carries a couple of connotations: It either makes you think of the cooperative mode in
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, or of the modest (and eventually budget-priced) series of tactical shooters for the PlayStation back in the late '90s/early '00s. Furthermore, its developer, Yager, is mostly known for the
same-titled 2004 Xbox shooter that actually isn't very well-known.
Which is a bit of a shame, because Spec Ops: The Line, shouldn't be dismissed so casually. It's not just another 20-dollar shooter featuring guys in fatigues; it's a modern cover-based shooter that equally pulls from media like
Heart of Darkness and
I Am Legend as it does from games like
Gears of War. It's also aiming to be a shooter that will make you think a bit when you're not busy blindfiring towards a bunch of bad dudes.
