Default Microsoft Ends Original Xbox Live Service
Microsoft has announced it will be closing its original Xbox Live service worldwide in April.
The offical annoucement

"Xbox Live services and online gaming for the first Xbox console, including for any original games playable on the Xbox 360, will be terminated on April
15th, 2010."

Xbox Press : A Letter from Marc Whitten: Discontinuation of Xbox LIVE for Original Xbox Games

I like the bit where they say "it is clear this will provide the greatest benefit to the Xbox LIVE community."

I guess it makes sense from the point of view that the product life-cycle is at an end - Realistically, Microsoft can't support it forever.

On the other hand it's a good example of why it sucks that console users are tied into proprietary networks - especially when you have to pay to use them!

What's messed up is LIVE users pay to use this proprietary network (on top of their ISP costs of course) to play a game (MW2) that uses peer to peer networking as its form of communication!!! WTF?!

I hope PSN doesn't go the "pay" way but I understand Sony's currently considering charging for certain "premium features".... that's how it starts

Dedicated servers would eliminate this problem. Sucks that you now cant play your old games online.

Do these people get a refund on their xbox live accounts?? Personally, it seems pretty harsh to have backwards compatability...then decide to completely hose the online play. what about people who buy games like Socom or MAG...that would ultimately suck if the PS3 decided to do that...the games were ONLY designed for online play.
