Default Best reasonably priced PS3-compatible headset with mic?

I know there's a thread similar/same as this on the discussion forum but I got confused reading it. Anyway, my wireless official PS3 headset broke and I was thinking of buying a replacement headset with mic cos my TV sound quality is terrible. I was recommended the TB but it's mad expensive. Is there a cheaper alternative that offers similar functionality?

An extra £6.

PX21 Turtle Beach Ear Force PX21 Gaming Headset - USB/Analogue Wired, USB/Analogue, Stereo, Foladable, Bass Boost, In-line Control : novatech.co.uk

I doubt you can go much better on a console for £50.

We are only against them, when there are MUCH better alternatives. At this price range, for a console user, there are no alternatives.

Yes this is true. Multidriver headsets like the TB HPX generally arent very good at producing "real" surround sound for the reasons you mentioned. The thing is however, when combined with the Astro Mixamp, most of these headphones revert back to one driver in each cup (i think HPX's revert to two 40mm drivers) so this is not as big a deal. I think you may have misunderstood exactly what the mixamp does. It is not that it "supports" 5.1, rather than it simulates (or "phases" as you put it) regular stereo speakers in to 5.1 surround.

As far as other options, I did list a few in my previous post. In terms of value the tritton ax720s are probably some of the best. $120 for a digital decoder (mixamp w/o audio mixing) and a passable headset.

Cheaper options and your not going to get 5.1.

If you don't have alot of money I would pick up the Koss ksc75 for $15
If it causes multi-driver headsets to revert to using a single driver, that would make them equivalent to £5 Sony earphones (Actually, Sony makes the best cheap earphones that I've ever used in a pinch) since the indivdual drivers are so tiny. It would completely and utterly defeat the purpose of buying a multi-driver headset in the first place.

The problem with claiming that it allows standard stereo headsets to simulate surround sound is that all stereo headsets are naturally capable of doing that anyway. Simulation is handled software-side and every single FPS game made within the past decade or so phase sounds from differing directions to varying degrees to produce this effect.

My claim re. the thing being a glorified volume control still stands, imo.

As i said in my post, the HPX's (the only multi-driver headset I am familiar with) reverts to 40mm drivers, which is a pretty standard size. Second, I never said I was a proponent of multi-driver headsets, so I dont even know how we got on this subject.

Regarding the rest of your post: So you're telling me technologies like Dolby Headphone and CMSS 3D are just bullshit? That there is no actual benefit from running standard stereo vs. one of these technologies?

There really is no way to respond to that. I hate to say this to someone who prides himself on being smarter than everyone, but that statement is just stupid.

All I can really say is your wrong

edit: This really isn't an opinion based thing. The astro mixamp converts stereo to Dolby Headphone, fact. Now admittedly, I don't know the intricacies of what this entails, but I do know that it constitutes a significant enough change to be called Dolby Headphone and not "phased stereo" or whatever it is your talking about. My point is, that at best, you can say you don't think Dolby Headphone does a good job of simulating surround sound. But to call it a glorified volume control is simply wrong.

Wait, nevermind, you've never even used the product before
