Default The Final Fantasy XIII Thread

PLEASE PUT ALL SPOILERS IN SPOILER TAGS. ANY SPOILERS NOT IN TAGS WILL BE EDITED OR REMOVED ENTIRELY. Thanks.

What are your opinions on this game?

Personally, I love it. Everyone knows the graphics are absolutely phenomenal. The attention to detail is also particularly good, especially in water sequences where it rains, you can even see the tiny little raindrops splatter on every surface.

Gameplay wise, it's very interesting, and they did this in a good way. It's no longer strictly turn-based, and you can only control the party leader in battle, and the computer controls your allies. The AI for them is shockingly pretty good, as they cast the correct spells and attacks at the right names, and heals when necessary.

The Battle System is great IMO. It's what FF12 and FFX-2 should have been. MP is no longer a factor here, it's all about timing and building the gauge for the Command Synergy Battle system. As you level you get more sections of the gauge, and each action takes up a slot. It's hard to explain in words really, however it's a great improvement.

I also like how enemies are placed into the maps, in contrast to clear space but random enemy encounters popping up. Also, if you can sneak behind the enemies, you can get the first hit in a Preemptive Strike, which causes an instant Stagger mode onto the enemies, which catches them off-guard for a significant damage increase.

Additionally, I feel that there is no more over-leveling. Which means there is a certain limit to your leveling, which in turn results in more challenging battles requiring more strategy and patience. You can max out the Crystarium (level-up feature) for the time being, and you can advance to higher levels once bosses are beaten and with story mode progression.

One of the gripes of the game that I have, which is all personal preference, is that you are limited to usually two or three people to fight with up until nearly the middle of the game. I'm spoiled by having all six party members to choose from, however I don't mind too much, since it flows with the story well.

The game is extremely linear however, the Zelda-gamer in me wants to explore more, however I can't make a final decision on the subject, since I'm only 20 hours into the game. Anyway, enough rambling.

I give it a 9.5 out of 10 so far. I love the game and have no huge issues with it. For those of you who has the game, how do you like it so far? Compliments? Gripes? Post your thoughts here.

Nope, never liked FF. I did like the film The Spirits Within but didn't even like FFVII.
I won't be trying this one either. GTA Episodes for me next now it's finally coming out on PS3.

I hope to get it one day when I know I'll have a great deal of free time ahead. I enjoyed one of them on the PS2 (no idea which one? MCLXVIII part XI?!), played it all the way through clocking in a ridiculous amount of time - great fun! Closest thing to crack I was on, bar WoW.

I don't exactly follow the story behind the series (if there is one) nor am a fan of the characters or their world(s).

But if it's anything like the one I played in the past, once I get it, I'll be needing to take Vitamin D supplements.

I used to play the old one (dont know which one it was but geezer was called cloud)

I downloaded it on PS3 while i was drunk ( unlike me )

Wish i hadnt tho....took about 700 days just to get anywhere and when i did it looked really fckin old.

Agree that they take up a lot of time but hey i was looking into the whole "accident at work" thing anyway.......

no MP but energy gauge
ive never played FF in my life (sad right?) but i really liek this game
ive been pre-occupied with prestiging, but now ive done that so now i can really start FF XIII. only 13 minutes into the game. only two characters, two moves. gets boring a little. the battle system is...different...but its fun. I just hate how you cant dodg attacks. i like real time action games. but whatever.

Gonna have to pick this one up eventually. Like others said, it's something you need a good chunk of free time ahead of you to really play.

I think I've played and passed every American release of FF, going back to FF1 for NES. With the exception of XII. I played it for awhile but then ended up dropping it. Good games, all of them.

This game filled the void after I completed Mass Effect 2. I am only 15 hours in (just haven't found much time to play) but I really love it. I played FFX relentlessly, for hours and hours this game is much more linear so less to explore in the early stages but I look forward to things as they develop.

Only complaint is the character Hope, he's one annoying lil pain in the ass. lol

Best game on the PS3 IMO

Only complaint is how linear it is and the fact that once the party leader is dead it game over.

Graphics are far better than anything i've seen gameplay is awesome best on the PS3 by far IMO.

I know Jo, I hated Hope at first too. But you'll grow to love the character, he develops really well.

Lightning's development is complex and amazing as well. I can't wait for you to play more to see it.

Sazh is hilarious, I love his supporting role in the game. Magic will come soon once the game introduces you to Roles. You're very close.

I have 61 hours so far and I'm on the last chapter, so you have a LONG way to go.

Im chapter eight, I hate sazh. I never liked him much.Vanille isnt much of an aid either. And i've spilled my clouds at chapter seven. So im pretty much in big trouble on the summoning of sazh

Man, I hate how they introduced the summonings in the game. They're strong and have infinite live, The only way to capture them. Is using one specific technique, One that i dont have developed very much.

I like the game, And hope is very annoying. Even once he develops himself. :\

Im now bouncing between this game and mw2. Its so weird.

FF does have some flaws. Like the treasure hunter trophy is EXTREMELY hard to get. it is a gold, but if you do one thing wrong, it makes the trophy impossible. so basically if you mess up one thing at the end, you have to start over to get this badge. so basically im hoarding all my items and selling nothing.

another flaw is the confusion in the plot. 3 of my friends got the game, i had to explain the plot to all of them. And i only understand the plot because a different friend (who loves FF and read the plot on wiki) told me whats happening.

This game is fun to play, and suprisingly its fun to watch people play it. Like MW2 (IMO)

I acquired the soundtrack to the game a few days ago, and honestly the music basically hasn't stopped playing on my laptop since. The music is beautifully composed, as I expected it to be.
