Default WoW $25 Horse DLC

For those of us that were bitchin and moaning about the MW2 DLC cost, take a look at what they are doing over at WoW.

Quote:
Fancy Horse Makes Blizzard $2 Million in Four Hours
New in-game pet for World of Warcraft is generating sales of about $500,000 an hour, so far.
By Frank Cifaldi, 04/15/2010

The Blizzard Pet Store is offering two new virtual pets to World of Warcraft players today, one of which has generated over $2 million in sales in its first four hours.
The "Celestial Steed" (right) is, according to its description on the Blizzard Store, "freshly born from the Twisting Nether" and allows players to "travel in style astride wings of pure elemental stardust."

More research is of course necessary but as of press time, it is widely believed that the Celestial Steed may be the fanciest horse ever born.

The fancy horse costs $25 and offers no new abilities to players, only riding as fast as a character's riding skill will enable it to go.

According to wow.com, the download queue as of 1:45 Pacific time was at 80,000. At $25 a pop, this means that this noble steed has generated sales of $2 million since its approximate debut at 9:30 this morning, or around $500,000 an hour.

1UP has reached out to Blizzard for commentary from the horse, and will report back if he is available.
From now on DLC is either gonna have to paid for directly to the mothership or through some other vendor that you have to buy their product and then get a code for it a'la Dr pepper and their BC2 code thing they have going on.

The days of expansion packs to keep you interested in games until the next iteration comes out are, sadly, gone.

Nah they are still there. DLC like this mount doesn't replace exp packs, it just compliments them - totally new revenue stream for the developers - in addition to what you would normally pay for anyway.

(though technically in WoW it isnt exactly downloadable content, rather it is effectively giving all your characters the ability to summon the mount which is, already in game)

The new WoW exp pack is out later this year I think and it will be massive in every way imaginable.

I would expect this formula will be similar in other game genres.

$25 is a fair amount though! Then again, if you haven't played WoW before, you have no idea how passionate fucking nuts people can get about a video game new way of life.

I see what you're saying Nibbles and agree that the Wow expansion pack will be big, really really big, just look at what BC and WotLK did. My thinking is that the horse was really just a way to take money away from gold sellers.

But it used to be that games like MW2 would have extra content (extra missions for the story line or maps for multiplayer) that they would give away to keep you playing their game rather than moving on to competitors. Granted, it was never very big but then neither is what folks are getting for the $15 they are spending on the "new" maps.

I've more or less moved on to BC2 and the news we've been hearing about the COD series developers isn't encouraging that the next game will be very good. A free teaser expansion a few months before the release of the next game my reignite my interest...but not if I would have to pay for it.

heck, the only reason I'm staying around here is the people and that compared to many other places there is a modicum of maturity.

idk if its a fair amount but yea I've played my share of WoW...its even more "crack like" than MW2.

Tis is me as well, I can't even play MW2 anyway even wheen I try due to excessive lag i.e. skipping around everywhere.

However I'm kinda excited for a Respawn Entertainment title now that they've coupled with EA. Who knows though hopefully BC2 comes out with some brand new maps cause I can see playing only the few maps they have getting tiring after awhile.

Totally agree. Sorry, I assumed when you referred to Expansion Pack in the OP, you were referring to paid content, like a WoW exp pack. Of course, the difference between this kind of paid content and the $25 horse is that silly things like The Stimulus Pack are game changing and segment the player base whereas a horse in WoW is purely ornamental.

But yes, it is ridiculous that they are charging anything at all for what would have been a major yet standard freebie patch back in the day (CS for example). If there were several new maps, new game modes, refined mechanics, perhaps a significant change in weapons or perks, new titles, etc then yeah it would probably qualify as a paid for expansion pack, but a couple of new maps is all ya get? No way.

Sticking with WoW as an example, the Stimulus pack is therefore treated in the same way as, and has the same effect as proper WoW expansion pack.. yet the comparitive amount of content is so small that it isnt even worth it! Split your player base because of 3 maps and nothing else? That sucks.

Agreed I am exactly the same.. mostly playing BC2 as my FPS of choice these days and here for pretty much the same reason as you - Cool community

I give blizzard the right to do that if they manage to keep 15 million players paying 10$ every month.

Those people are basicly slaves.

That appears to be how MMOs are going, I mean Guild Wars, which doesn't have a subscription fee announced this a week or so back. A few shitty skins for $10, they don't even do anything unlike the Celestial Steed.

doesnt really suprise me at all.Far from the first time Blizzard pulled off something like this, but likely to be the most absurd stunt.

Now that breaks my heart....Guild Wars, with no subscription, was my game of choice for 3+ years. I played it the way many played WoW. I thought their mgt was more right headed than trying to milk the consumers for weak DLC.
I WAS very much looking forward to GW2. If this is an indication of how its going to be I may just stay away. I really dont want to be nickled and dimed just to be on par with others.

this horse was lame it got released and every player in every city was shouting look at my naf mount. i just feel sorry for people who spend real money on these sorts of gimmick DLC items, it has no use other than looking good and that has been ruined because every mother licker has it.

i feel the new expac will sell well but it won't retain as many users just usher in a new generation of wow newbs for all the elite jerkies to moan about again, let alone everyone moaning now about all the changes that will be happening.

WoW at the minute is just ezmode, in the name of streamlining so every one can see the content before the new one comes out, which has lead to a huge uproar from the faithfull players who actually worked for their equipment. now anyone can get enough equips to do the highest teir raid in about 2 hours.

another thing you pay £7.99 a month to play, damn thats more than x box live and you only get to play one game. sure its big and can keep you entertained for a few months but by then you have a level 80 and done all dungeons and raids.

theres alway QQ on WoW over the tiniest things, people feeling hard done by, people winging about ninja looting and now a mount that requires no time to get and is about as pointless as having an eyeball on my toe.

the expac is in friends and family alpha test at the minute, soon to be in beta.

i recently ended my wow sub, due to not feeling it was worth my time and money, yes it is the biggest MMO out, but to be honest its pretty easy.
