I'm kinda on a poll kick right now so heres another poll.
I have spent the last hour or so picking the most praised and acclaimed FPS titles since the dawn of gaming. Each pick has in some way or another defined the genre of shooters and changed the way they're played. So my question is, which do you think had the biggest impact on gaming? Which game caused the biggest detour in the way they're made and the way we play them? Personally, i always have to pick Perfect Dark. The sister game to Goldeneye and the first true customizable multiplayer experience. Just about anything you wanted to change about the game (aside from the maps) was optional. Not sure how many hours i wasted playing that game but i know i'm up to 10 days on MW2, and that doesn't even scratch the surface. And if you're wondering why MW2 didn't make the list, then you're a moron.

True, but if you had to pick which one left the biggest footprint, which would you pick?

Personally I think that Quake was the biggest overall contributor to FPS gaming (Starcraft for RTS games ofc). It made the world take this little hobby of ours a little bit more seriously when people started playing to win millions of dollars at tournies. As far as consoles go, I think Goldeneye is the earliest example for something that people tried to copy for years to follow. Halo 1 also left a huge footprint in how multiplayer was played on consoles, not to mention after the Halo titles I think there was a pretty drastic increase in games that offered co-op campaigns.

Doom. Isn't it basically the game that kickstarted the whole genre and actually got popular?
It's also an FPS in the most basic sense: first person, and you shoot stuff!

Doom would have to have been the largest influence on single and multiplayer FPS games.
AFAIK, it was the first game to allow PvP in a FPS (if there was anything before it, it would have been relatively unknown) and is where the term "deathmatch" was born in the context of MP gaming. It also spawned a whole heap of "doom clones" such as Duke Nukem 3D, Rise of The Triad, Heretic, etc.. the mid 90's was full of them. It was also likely to be highly influential in kicking off modding - an important part of FPS gamings history - map packs with modified graphics, weapons, etc were very popular (yay for .WAD files) and there were a number of map editors out - I can't recall modding of a commercial title on that kind of scale prior to Doom. Very cool game, heaps of fun at the time. BTW if you have an iphone, you can grab it (and Wolfenstein3D) from the app store - it plays very smoothly and the controls aren't too bad either. *scratches head* I thought that the initial Doom games were single player only, and that Quake was the game that broke ground in multiplayer. Doom was definitely at the forefront for FPS games in general though, that is true. With how devilish the game was for its time it really made it easier for games that were "easier on the stomach" to shine in an otherwise controversial genre.
Not to mention the fact that it was just plain badass

I remember when I first heard about Doom from a friend who played it with his elder brother and his colleagues at work. Hearing about these networked games where you ran around shooting other people playing the same game was pretty amazing at the time.... and there were CHAINSAWS!!! ![]() There were no multi-player specific maps that shipped with the game - most people just played on small "campaign mode" levels such as E1M1 which had Multiplayer spawn points - it was just one map but I don't think I ever got bored of it. Spawn camping (or the spawn system in general) wasn't an issue then because there was a max I think of 4 people on the map (perhaps 8 people with Doom 2, I can't remember) and I can't recall anyone wanting to camp anyway. But there were plenty of multi-player maps developed by the community. There was also a co-op mode where you could play the "campaign mode" with a friend through the entire game. At one point someone started up a free dial up BBS service in my city which would allow you to create network deathmatch games with other people who connected to the service - IPX over dialup. It was amazing for its time and I have no idea how it was paid for! Must have been pricey with all those lines. Quake was probably the first FPS PC game designed around multi-player as a preference to single player mode, whereas with Doom, it did feel as though it was more designed originally as a single player game, but it kicked off the revolution - all the "doom clones" that followed had MP support as standard and it just became the norm from then on in for FPS games, but Quake was probably the first "serious" one. Quake also popularised the mouse + keyboard combo used today, being the first true 3D FPS MP game (Doom wasn't true 3D), and one of the first to support native TCP/IP - starting off gaming over the internet. What Nibbles said!!
Also the other game that sprang to mind apart from doom and quake was wolfenstein. Any reason it is not on the list. Doom though for me kickstarted the whole genre. Dungeon master was the first 3d person game i remember (walking around a castle where all the walls looked identical), but doom made it fun. Also the Big Fcking Gun, loved that thing. |

It would have to be Doom. When that game came out (yeah I'm that old) it was revolutionary.
All these FPS' after Doom were just evolutionary.

As others have said doom for multiplayer but for FPS in general it has to be wolfenstein. At least thats the first fps I remember..... damn thing gave me motion sickness the first few times I played it, but killin Nazi's was fun fun fun.
The humor of Duke Nuk'em made it one of my favorites

The genre defining are Quake, Doom, and specially Wolfenstein 3D because it' the game that started FPS as we know it today, lol @ CoD4.

I voted Counter Strike simply because its a PC exclusive game and the PC muliplayer FPS games started years before consoles where made therefore it has to be a PC game that defined the future of multiplayer FPS games the most
Indeed if there is to be any further improvement with online gaming it will be lead by the PC platform unless they make vast improvements in consoles very qiuckly both in the hardware and there abilities MW2 is a perfect example of a game dumbed down because it was made for consoles with limited abilities and features You can flame away but if you dont understand where i,am coming from you deserve no further improvements over what you have now

I was wondering when someone would pick counterstrike. Honestly when i made the poll i thought it would take the cake from the amount of people that i know who loved playing it.

CS (CSS in particular) may have defined the modern competitive FPS, but it was DOOM that first put most people in an environment with a choice of weapons, respawning, TDM, compact maps etc

Definately Doom. It made the biggest impact on most of the FPSs today. Wolfenstein I'm pretty sure was inspired by Doom.

Technically, the Duke Nukem series was around first, but started out as a side scroller. Though i would have to say that based on word of mouth, Doom was more popular in my group of friends and i hadn't really heard of Wolfenstein till a while later.
