Default Recording Footage on Xbox 360/PS3

We're going to tackle HD first. A lot of videos on Youtube are in HD, however, not true HD, for they just capture with standard quality, and use an HD resolution. The following is what you need to capture in High Definition.

HDTV

If you want to record in HD, while playing in HD, you will need two things. You will need Component cables for your PS3. Try going into Radioshack, or order some online. You can buy them online here for pretty cheap. Amazon.com: PlayStation 3 Component AV Cable: Video Games

Now that we have that settled, you'll need a capturing device. I personally recommend the Happauge HD PVR. Which can be observed Here. It's a bit pricey, but in anything electronic, you get what you pay for. It's $250. It comes with a set of component cables to connect to the device, install disc, and of course the device itself. With this device you can also record your television shows if you have an HD cable box.

Since we're looking into the gaming area, this is the device you want. Just be sure your laptop can handle it. So long as you have 2GB of RAM, you should be fine. Here is a link to the installation video if you want to check it out. Very informational, and everything is right in front of you. YouTube - Hauppauge HD PVR Setup Tutorial Xbox 360 PS3

Hauppauge HD PVR System Requirements:

SDTV

You have many options when it comes to recording and playing in Standard Definition. A Dazzle is basically a capture card that connects via USB port. I recommend the Dazzle Platinum. You will need three composite cable splitters to be able to play on the TV, and record on your PC. Specifically a Y RCA splitter, which looks like this. It splits the signal so you can play on your TV, like I said above.

This is what a Dazzle looks like. It provides pretty good quality, and I definitely recommend it over the EzCap and the Blitzbox B1, and it cost's anywhere from $50-90 dollars.

EDIT: Here is a video of the complete setup to the Dazzle. This shows what you need, where to get it, and how to set it up. Click me!

If you have any questions, please let me know, I've worked with many capturing devices in my time. Hope this gives you some insight.

Want to record in High Definition? Try the Happauge HD PVR. And for Standard Definition, try the Dazzle. Again, I have experience with both devices, I'll answer any question you need.

Unfortunatly the Happauge doesn't natively support a Mac. Fortunately, it can work with the Mac if you use the Eye TV software apparently.

Thanks for the write up NinJa!

Is there any equivalent device that you know of which has its own onboard storage for HD Recording? I have an old SD recorder with a 160GB Drive which worked well for TV (when I used to watch it!) a few years back.

For example, if I just wanted to record something on the fly, it'd be cool to just hit a button on a remote, which would save the video to the drive of the PVR device. This in itself is effectively what a normal PVR does but getting the file off the PVR is the key bit for me. There needs to be some way to copy it onto a computer for editing. This is what I'm after, ideally with wifi.

Or would I be better off building a mythTV type rig? http://www.mythtv.org/

It would be a fantastic project but I'm far too lazy for that.

Here is a tutorial on how to work the Happauge HD PVR with EyeTV. How do I setup the Hauppauge HD PVR with EyeTV?

Unfortunately, the only recording software I know of that records in HD is the Happauge. The one other product I can recommend that has full support for Mac, would be the Black Magic Intensity Pro, however you have to install the capture card itself onto the computer, and to record, edit, and playback the HDMI based video would require a pretty strong computer for the job. I do not believe the BMIP can record your TV, such as television programs, I must admit that I am not inexperienced on that product, and I wouldn't want to give you false information, so I apologize I can't be of much help there.

I personally think you're better off with the Happauge.

If your desktop isn't close enough to your system make sure you buy splitters.

Elgato EyeTV HD Video Recorder - Apple Store (U.S.)

Will this essentially take the place of the Hauppauge HD PVR? I know before you were talking about The Haupauge use in unison with Eye TV but was EyeTV on software prior to this product?

Default Hauppauge 1212 HD-PVR

Does anyone here that play on a console have this? I have been looking into buying one. They are HD and seem to be easy to use so I figured why not...Does anyone no of anything else that records in HD, is cheaper and easy to use or has this particular model?

I have it and it's worth every penny if you are a relatively serious gamer that wants to put up high definition videos. There is one other HD capture card however it requires a decent PC to use. It's basically an HDMI capture card, whereas the Happauge captures with Component Cables. However I recommend the Happauge HD PVR over it because it's more convenient to use.

Editing HD videos is a different story, as you need a good processor and a decent amount of RAM to edit HD videos smoothly.

Yes, thank you, I have herd GREAT reviews for this particular product but none from a fellow gamer. I have a nice macbook pro to edit with so I am set there. Thank you for your advice, you actually just made my decision.

The mac book needs some kind of program with it. I have windows so I don't remember what it is. Dizzy Doug does an EXCELLENT tutorial on setting it up with a mac and everything. If you want me to, I can give you the link.

Yeah I think there is two, one is called Eyecapture or Eyetiger or something. I am aware of the second and you can download it for mac, the Hauppauge program, from the website. But that would be awesome for a link. Thanks...
