Default The Beatles Appreciation

It wasn't until about a year ago that I started listening to their music and since then they've become my favorite band. Like them or hate them their songs shaped the music industry into what it is today.

I used to listen to them a lot more than I do now, but I still enjoy their music from time to time. I love Yesterday, it's a great song.

Hear hear!

Though that does make it sound like they are responsible for the shit state of the music industry which isn't true. I know what you mean though. They were effectively the catalyst and basis for modern day (ie: from the 1960's to now) pop / rock music.

Have you seen the 5 (or is it 6) disc Anthology doco? Bloody brilliant to watch each part back-to-back if you have half a day free.

I'm not a huge fan, though I do appreciate how they shaped the music of today. I will say this, I am making it a part of my will that "Imagine" is played at my funeral.

Ah the documentary, unfortunately I don't have sufficient funds to make that purchase ATM and I'm focusing on getting all of their albums and their movie Let it Be.

Anyways any specific songs/albums you guys like?

I could go on forever listing my favorites songs so I'll go with Albums.

Roughly every song in:
Abbey Road
Sgt Peppers
The Beatles (The White Album)

A few in:
Let it Be
Hard Day's Night
Revolver
Rubber Soul

Cool! I'm into the slightly more bizarre Magical Mystery Tour and Sgt Peppers. White Album is pretty amazing and Abbey Road, the most uplifting. It was their last recorded album even though it was released before Let It Be. They knew they were breaking up and fortunately did it on a happy note (despite the later rivalry between Paul and John) with this Album.

I highly recommend the album "Love" released a couple of years ago mixed by George Martin's son. It's a very cool, Floydish mix of many of their songs (about 2 dozen listed on the sleeve but samples many more) that flow into each other incredibly well and some are just damn clever (eg, there's a segue between I am the Walrus and I Want to Hold Your Hand - the hiss of the radio at the end of Walrus morphs slowly into the screams of the audience at an Ed Sullivan show where they play I Want to Hold Your Hand - clever and kinda poignent in a way, though you really have to hear it to appreciate the timing - it does sound a little sappy on paper).

My favorite song (of all time) is A Day In The Life.

I searched for WEEKS to find Sgt Peppers, finally found it in a used music shop somewhere near Fort Worth, damn well worth the 60 Mile Drive. This and Abbey Road was a masterpiece, but after seeing clips from Let it Be and a few interviews afterward its surprising to see they pulled off this album even with the whole group fighting with each other. Hell when John died all Paul could say was "it was a drag"

On a lighter note I have listened to Love, and its a masterpiece. Usually I hate remixes of songs but Love pulls it off nicely.

Yeah, they had pretty much informally broken up at that point. Paul suggested they make another album, the way they used to and to leave the shit outside so to speak. Noone said it at the time but they all knew it (Abbey Road) was the last one, and was apparently one of their most enjoyable albums to record.

Yeah I could tell they were having fun all throughout 1969. If you saw the rooftop concert you know what I mean, there's all having fun and there's energy in their music compare this to when they did these songs live after they broke up and you can see the difference.

YouTube - The Beatles - I've Got A Feeling (Apple Rooftop) [HD]

YouTube - Paul McCartney - I've Got A Feeling (Live in Kiev 2008)

Paul was so much livelier when the group was together.

Yeah.. John was the only one who did well solo IMO. The others did the occasional good song (hell, even Ringo did with It Don't Come Easy ) but there wasn't anything consistently special with their stuff.

Janis Joplin said it best:
*Janis mockingly sings*
"I wanna hold your hand"
Then says -
No you don't, your 25. You want to dick her"

Hehe.. Though TBH, I'd sing anything at all if it made *that* much cash.

The thing is, like their music or not (which is a little hard for me to understand given that, genre-wise their musical range is probably more diverse than just about any other band), the shit they pulled off was genius and influence was (and still is) mind boggling.

But I only came to the thread to add this:

I'm afraid I'm with Skuh on this one. There were loads of bands around at that time that contributed to the sounds that developed over the following 10/20 years, many of them technically and artistically superior to the Beatles. They were just the ones that got lucky and pulled away from the pack.
Don't get me wrong, they did some classic songs, but no more than say the Kinks, The Animals, the Stones, bloody hell the list could go on and on. what turns me off is that every other song is about love and that gets really boring, really quickly. That and the fact they turned really damn weird after their trip to India. Bit too trippy for my liking.
