Default Serj Tankian

So like many people I was a big fan of SOAD, mainly due to Serj Tankian's amazing vocals. It was a real shame that Daron Malakian hijacked a lot of the lead vocals for hypnitize/mesmerize as frankly he can't sing for sh*t.
I was unfortunately quite disappointed with Serj's solo effort, Elect the Dead, but my interest was renewed when I heard he was releasing a live version backed by the Aukland symphony orchestra.
Lo and behold, my faith has been restored in one of the best metal voices of the past decade. Any one else liking the new release?

I'm a huge fan of SOAD, but never really listened to much of Serj Tankian's solo offerings, perhaps I should check it out.

I do disagree about Darren's efforts on Hypnotize/Mezmerize though, I thought it sounded great.

If you do, I reccomend the live one first, it seems to be more accessible on first listening than the studio album - no heavy guitars though, which is a shame

I guess that's the eternal arguement about differing taste. Still, I was always confused why Serj had to take a back seat so much, I think that may be why SOAD are 'on a break' at the moment
.

SOAD are okay. Never heard any of his solo stuff tho. I do like a good chopping guitar though so maybe not my cup of tea.

Yeah, Serj and SOAD are a bit ecclectic, they're one of the few bands that really divide opinion, rather like Marmite. I'd always ask people to check it out for free (spotify/mates) before shelling out any money.....
But if you're into full orchestras + one very good male metal singer then you can't go wrong!

If you like orchestras and metal have you heard Apocalyptica doing the Black album by metallica. No Vocals just a few instruments. The cello works well though and gives enter sandman a "haunting" sound.

I heard SOAD live years ago and it's one of the most memorable performances I have ever seen. Serj's vocals live are amazing! I loved the Elect the Dead symphony backing because it was much more dramatic and I think the two complimented each other well. I know he is on tour now, with local symphonies backing him for his concerts. He hasn't scheduled anything in this area because he couldn't book the local symphony.
