Probably smart to answer in a "at this approximate portion of your life what musical..."
Sorry. I know if you're really into a type of music that I don't know about I'll have missed it or called it something vague or generic (like all chavs think all music with guitars & chords is "heavy metal")

I mostly listen to electronic (Specifically, drum and bass, not that tacky techno bs). Stuff like The Prodigy and Pendulum.

I guess you could call it "Math Rock" or "Shoe Gaze". Lots of instrumental music, with a variety of instruments, like vibraphone and the saw. Examples are Maserati, The Mercury Program, Del Rey and Mogwai.

The musical genres I typically listen to the most would be emocore and screamo. I've just started listening to this type of music in the last six months or so and I love it. It holds a lot of meaning behind the lyrics for most songs. It's definitely made a large impact on my life and the way I portray myself.

The vast majority of what I listen to is "Nu-Metal" but really I think "brit-rock" is a much better description for most of my stuff despite it not being british.
Whilst you'll also find some of my favourite songs are from Chase & Status, Pendulum, Sub Focus, Doorly, Example, Dizzee Rascal etc I'm not a die-hard DnB fan nor would I say I'm a "pop" fan because the Alexandra Burke & Gaga side of it all can just f*** off. I've found that recently my "recently added" is made up partly of expanding of this so called Nu Metal/brit rock genre as I'd expect but the other half is purely whatever is played in clubs hence the forays into the more mainstream DnB (as I said, Pendulum, Sub Focus, Prodigy, not the real die hard stuff) more... lively pop (example, dizzee, ndubzzsszzzssss, tinchy stryder, tinie tempah, hudson, jason deeerrulllooooooooooo etc) Although when 11 - 14 I was around a lot of music then so still have a natural enthusiasm for Blink, Green Day, Sum 41, Chillis, Oasis, Eminem, Run DMC (Why hello SSX Tricky) yada yada EDIT: I should have put a "more popular" and a "more diehard" variation for each options. I love pendulum, sub focus, prodigy etc but not D&B. I like the "pop" (one hit wonders) that get played in clubs, but I don't love "pop." I love eminem, fort minor, but I don't love rap. I love some Dubstep (Where's my money? I'm not bulletproof, just bonkers. Bonkers remix) but I'm a million miles away from describing tunes as "filthier than..." or being enthusiastic about all/only dubstep.

I most often listen to Metal or Progressive Music(Dream Theater, Opeth, Porcupine Tree, Rush etc), but sometimes listen to classical stuff like Vivaldi, sometimes some 80s pop stuff, some funk, some jazz fusion, some folk music, some irish songs, some regular jazz, guitar virtuosos(like Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert, Joe Satriani. No idea how to put that into a genre cause to me they are more than just the standard "rock" guitarists) I'll probably give most types of music a chance as long as it's not today's or recent pop/radio stuff or DnB or anything even remotely similar to that kinda stuff.(sorry because I know a LOT of you love this type of music and I am not starting anything here) Ghost I like your style!

Too hard to answer - I don't really fix to or prefer any genre over another because, like films, I can't correlate genre with appeal for myself.
Besides certain catchy & innovative rock / pop (eg Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Beatles, Nirvana, Rolling Stones, The Streets, White Stripes and an old fan of Nine Inch Nails) I have a few personal preferences. Regardless of genre, I tend to prefer it when the roots of blues and funk are prominent in the music (and just about every part of modern music evolved from basic blues and funk patterns). Rock, Metal, etc: should have a sense of groove/rhythm/funk in their riffs (eg GnR's Appetite for Destruction, RatM, most early Led Zepplin, early Metallica and even Pantera as far as the more popular bands go). Hip Hop: Again, gotta be funky and it's nice when there's some innovation happening. Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, NWA, Run DMC, (some) Eminem, Public Enemy, Outkast, Digable Planets, Beastie Boys and a heap of pre 90's stuff would be some of my more popular favorites here. Dance / Electronic: Fatboy Slim, Chemical Brothers, Plump DJ's, Bently Rhythm Ace, most Nu Skool Breaks (TCR Records), Breakbeat, a little DnB, a little Techno and the wacky Dubstep stuff all the kids are into these days. Massive Attack can do no wrong, Freq Nasty, Faithless, etc... Country: Johnny Cash or anyone else with a depressing bluesy song / style, but none really come close to him - he is country music - set everyone else on fire. Blues: mostly anything pre 70's. Leadbelly, Bo Diddly, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker.. I wont go on but the older it gets, the rawer and better it gets. Jazz: again, not going into detail but pretty much anything up to and including some Miles Davis. Also really like Charles Mingus for some reason. I can't say Jazz is something I listen to often though, particularly the more complex stuff - too technical, but it has its place Soul / RnB: Fantastic in the 60's & 70's, fucked up in the 90's & 00's - it's a different genre with the same name. These days it just sounds like everyone's in a pop idol show trying to out-sing each other and have forgotten about the groove. Hrrmmm.. I see I have gotten a little carried away in my reply.... stopping now before this becomes a wall of text... Last edited by Nibbles; 09-10-2010 at 03:45 AM. |

I hate the term "screamo" as it carries a lot of negativity. There is very emotional, sad screamed music by people who sound a lot more like they're whining. And then there is controlled, thought out lyrics with more of a meaning to them. Sometimes they're sad, too, but less "cut my wrists and black my eyes" as they are just poetic. Also, the focus generally isn't on the vocals. It is on the instrumentation. Generally, if you like heavy instrumentation you need something that blends well with that, and screams/growls do the trick. Then, for some flavor, you add in more melodic elements and a clean singer. With this, you get a much more balanced form, and perhaps, respectable form of music. Less of being a bitchy teen and more of someone who cares about the music they're producing and/or real world issues. Lately, this type of music is being called "hardcore" (or variants ending in core, such as metalcore, deathcore, etc. all depending on their variance in sound). Now, truthfully, I find those names downright retarded, but that's what it is called - besides it isn't the name that matters, it is the music!
Anyways, I generally listen to hardcore (technically heavy metal, I guess).

I've added Hardcore brap Gangster brap 9mm Rap (which btw can f*** off. Eminem is popular because he raps about life not guns/women/supercars (which literally 99.99999% of "gangsters" definitely do not own lamborghinis/ferraris/hummer H2s/Evo 10s etc that you see in every music video ever produced) and HBK (pre 90s)

Hmm there's nothing up there that really describes what I like. I suppose the Nu Metal stuff is close, ie Linkin Park, Lost Prophets etc. Electronica is up there too but I would be more in the Hardcore Techno realm. I also like what I call Hard Rock, Disturbed, Slipknot, Red, some Skillet, old school Evans Blue. I like a little of everything so it's hard to determine exactly where I lie.
eeeyyyeeessss. It's the only thing, that slowly stops the aaaache. That song got me pumped before football games (real mans football not that running around bullshit kicking a white ball. The kind you had to go out and hit someone) . That and Bombshell by Powerman 5000.

Not really sure how to vote (I haven't yet) because my iPod is pretty diverse and what I like and dislike changes a lot. Like right now i'd say I actively dislike about 10% of the music on it but in a week or a month I might be listening to that stuff on repeat all the time.
I guess a good summary of my music taste would be a small list of artists: Barenaked Ladies, Beastie Boys, Beethoven, The Clash, DJ Khaled, Ke$ha, Lady Gaga, Ratatat, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, System of a Down, Tchaikovsky, Van Halen. Pretty much is the gist of my taste. How do I vote lal?

Babez you really like Rush? like THE Rush??(Neil Peart, Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson?) what about other prog music? if you like Rush you gotta like some other proggy goodness!
EDIT: Sorry you just don't seem like the kind of person that would listen to the 20+ minute prog songs or epics(when I say epic I don't mean omg this song is so epic this band are kewl!, I mean long story like songs that last about 20 minutes) and mention AC/DC(who are NOTHING like rush at all and shouldn't even be in the same sentence as rush, which made me think it was another rush, once again not starting anything or meaning to cause offence to AC/DC fans)

I voted pre 90's cuz I have been jammin out to the old rock/pop stations lately (Chris was witness to this when he visited) but I listen to lots of stuff. Just whatever suits my mood.
And for me the era of music I grew up with grunge/alternative will always hold a special place in my heart. I can't help but have a flash back to middle school when Bush, Nirvana or OLD Green Day comes on the radio either.

I am undecided between Nu Metal, Grime, and Electronica. All 3 have their space in my heart.
:| EDIT: "Hardcore Rap/Grime" makes it sound so dirty. :|
