Default Afghan mini guide

I have decided to embark on doing one of these for every single map, stay tuned.
If they're successful I will see if I can get one of the mods or admins to sticky a thread that contains a link to all of the maps.

Originally I was going to do a review of all the maps, but 13 has already posted them. This guide will be a close analysis of the map Afghan. Some Demolition tips will also be provided. As well as popular camping spots used by people.

I generally play Demolition and HCS&D and HCTDM. Any advice given will be based on experience derived from these game modes.

This is not complete, but I have posted it with the intention of getting feedback and for you guys to add anything you think I should put in it.

Afghan:

Map Overview:

Afghan: Afghan is one of the larger maps in MW2. The visibility can be poor but not as bad as some of the other maps like Overpass Sub-Base and Derail. It lends itself to camping, there are many spots in which people can hide in and there is a lot of high ground to hold as well as rocks to hide behind. The main features of the map are the centralised plane, the bunkers and the caves.

(more to come on this section)

Suggested Weapons, Attachments and Equipment:

Overview:
Generally an AR or a SR are the weapons typically seen, due to the size and the elevation of the map.
SMGs (Sub Machine Gun) can be used but it is generally wiser to use an AR or SR.

Weapons: A high powered AR such as the SCAR-H and TAR-21 are effective on Afghan because of the size of the map, most of your kills are going to be at long or mid range. You can also use the FAL and AK-47 (if you have unlocked it)

ARs with higher rates of fire and lower power such as the F2000 aren't as effective because you don't have the firepower to take enemies out quickly, the accuracy and recoil also come into effect with these guns. This is not to say that you will fail if you use these weapons, however, they are the most effective ones to use.

If you want to use a Sniper Rifle then use the one you like the most, they're all equally effective. I would hesitate using the M21EBR however as at long distances you want one hit kills.

Attachments:

Sights:

Iron Sights:
They can be used! That said, at longer ranges even the good Iron Sights such as the SCAR-Hs can be difficult to see through. They're not impossible to use but you would be better off with a sight or a scope.

RDS/Holographic:
The RDS or Holographic Sights are very good, particularly on Afghan, whether you use the RDS or the Holographic is down to your personal preference, however (correct me if I am wrong, the Holographic appears to have a higher zoom factor). I would recommend a Holographic sight on Afghan.

Scopes:

Thermal Scopes:
Thermal scopes can work well on Afghan, I would not usually put them on an Assault Rifle (AR) except for maybe the ACR because of the recoil. That said they are very good on Sniper Rifles (SR) and work well. However, the visibility is not so bad that you cannot snipe without one. It is personal preference.

ACOG:
The ACOG scope can be taken instead of a RDS or Holo. The reduced sway and the new crosshair introduced to the ACOG scope in MW2 make them much better than they were in COD4. With the size of Afghan using the ACOG scope can be very beneficial for counter sniping and also occupying a dead snipers spot for a kill or two.

Other Attachments:

Silencer:
Silencers can be used on Afghan, but the reduced range that it causes and thus damage can mean a difference between a kill and the enemy getting away at long range.

Heartbeat Sensor:
With a range of 20 meters, the heartbeat sensor can lead you into a false sense of security on Afghan. More often than not your engagements will be at distances greater than 20 meters. Also, more and more people are using Ninja. There are more useful attachments to take such as a sight or scope if you do not want to use Bling.

Extended Mags:
If you have unlocked extended magazines you are free to use them. I haven't used them a great deal so if anyone could tell me if they're effective or not that would be good.

Grenade Launcher:
Again, I have not used the grenade launcher much on Afghan so I am not in a position to discuss the merits of it. If someone has an awesome use for them then post it, otherwise it's pretty simple, one attachment for a few easy kills. Again, if you don't want to use Bling then take a Sight or Scope instead.

Akimbo: You are very unlikely to hit anything. Akimbo 1887s or pistols are fine though.

King Voodoo's "Perk of the Day(Map)"

Marathon: Afghan is a big map, using Marathon cuts down your travel time and also makes sure you don't run out of sprint when you are not in cover.

Camping:
A word on camping: Although I do not like doing it, I do not care if people camp, it's how they have decided to play the game and it's their choice, if you have a sniper rifle, you have to camp instead of running looking like a retard. I use the word camping warily and for want of a better word.
This section is designed to identify the places that the majority of campers use.

I've put numbers on the boxes. You'll have to open a new window/tab then zoom click to see them properly.

Popular ones are:
1: on top of the large plane wing, they can see much of "The Pit" but they can only cover so much at one time, which makes them vulnerable.

2: In the Big Bunker windows, they generally watch the plane and the ridge.

3: In the Small Bunker window, the Small Bunker is very well protected with only one entrance, campers usually put a single claymore at the entrance and stick to a corner if they suspect someone coming

4: On top of the ridge, although a very obvious spot it can still be very effective when occupied by a good sniper, the best way to get them is either to pick them off when they pop up to take a shot and failing that to flank behind them and shoot them in the back.

5: Just below the ridge is a little ledge that you can drop down on. It is very open but there is a little bush that campers like to hide in. The spot offers a very wide field of vision and you can see from the caves to the spawning point for attackers in Demo/S&D. If the spot is occupied by a sniper it can be very hard to see them with their ghillie suit in the bush.

6: This covers two spots as it is really chance which one a camper will use. The tallish grass on either side of the northern entrance is a favourite for prone, crouch, fire type campers. They can pick off people coming out of the caves as well as people on the ridge and in the Small Bunker and Big Bunker.

7: In the Poppy Fields in the most northern corner there is a tree and a little wooden ledge that provides a field of vision to almost all of the Poppy Field and the entrance to the Small Bunker

8: Also in the Poppy Fields is the Shack, shown on the map. People don't generally camp for very long in there but it can be used for one or two kills before moving on.

9: In the most western point of the map there is an AA Gun that people hide amongst, you can cover most of the Ridge (Air Defence West on the Map). It can be very hard to kill someone in this spot as they're difficult to see amongst the AA gun, generally speaking a good grenade or semtex will do the trick as the downside to hiding in the AA gun is that you are within the sand bag and this makes it hard to get out.

10: 10 is in blue because of the map colour. The outcrop of rocks south west of the southern entrance of the cave overlook the catwalk and Air Defence West. It is a very common camping spot when defending the B Bomb Site in Demolition game modes.

11: Overlooking the B Bomb Site is a rock outcrop that people get on top on. I can almost guarantee that there will be someone in that spot after A Bomb Site has been destroyed in Demolition. The spot covers the cave exit (south) as well as the catwalk, and it is a bitch to kill them.

12: 12 is another rock outcrop near B, however Overlooking the valley leading into Bomb Site B from the East. Campers will watch the valley entrance to B Bomb Site.

13: Below 12 is a small tree and rock outcrop. People hide there, and pick off people exiting the caves and catwalk and valley, they can see everyone that passes through Bomb Site B.

There are obviously more camping sites that people use, I just put down the ones I see frequently. The Caves themselves and the Rocks to the west of them often house sneaky players, but pin pointing where they are is difficult as they usually move around.

S&D: I haven't played a great deal of S&D on Afghan, in the games that I have played however; bomb site A is popular for a fast plant. The bunkers and the plane itself are good spots to defend the bomb, when fast planting A you must be careful of noob tubes. The spawn points are such that the Defenders can equip the Grenade Launcher and fire and it will land and detonate right on the path towards A; this is illustrated with the curved red line and star. I don't have much else to say about it but feel free to send me a PM or post a reply with your input. I'm sure someone will make a S&D specific guide sometime in the future.

Demolition:

Afghan is very difficult to attack in Demolition. If you want to win attacking on Afghan, you need to take B first. That is not to say that it cannot be done the other way, it is just more difficult.

If your team destroys A first then the other team just hole up in the rocks around B, making it very difficult to plant at B or even get close to it. The best tactic to win when Attacking is a Fast Plant at B by using lightweight and marathon heading through the Air Defence West and then down the Catwalk. The more direct route through the caves cab be used but it is also risky because you can be seen easier than if you go the long way. It is possible however to make it look like a feint and have one or two people try for A while you go to B, you must also be cautious around the caves as there usually is someone in the caves.

If the worst case scenario happens and you have destroyed A first; the most successful games I have had trying to destroy B second have been either Tactical Insertions in the caves and smoke grenades. Storming the Bomb Site while smoked and either rushing the campers around the rock outcrops. If you don't use your tactical insertion in the caves you can try and tactically insert at the most southern point of the map, if your entire team does this (you're playing with a clan) then it makes planting and defending much easier. The alternative to this is to try Ninja Plant under the cover of smoke grenades and covering fire and grenades/semtex.

When Defending on Afghan you have a much easier job. Be wary of a fast plant to B, usually the whole team heads towards the Plane and the Big Bunker, where the action is at. If this happens it is worth going through the valley to the left of spawn and defend Bomb Site B and call your team mates back if they're attacking it hard. Sometimes, this is just personal opinion. I think it is almost better to let them take A with no resistance and instead just get the whole team defending B.
If you lose B first you've a much larger chance of losing the game than if A goes first.0

If you lose B first you have to defend A. Because A is in the middle of the map your are vulnerable when defending to flanks. The Big Bunker and inside the cock pit of the plane are good places to defend A. Sniping from the Ridge in Air Defence West is also a good way to defend A. It's possible to defend A from the caves as well, and using the plane as cover you have a good path to the bomb site if it gets planted. You want to be in a position where you can safely get to the bomb, preferably without being seen. If the bomb does get planted at A, the best way to defuse it is by doing it quickly, it sounds stupid and obvious but it's true and worth saying. The longer it stays planted is more time that the opposition have to get back to defend it. The enemy respawns close to A too so they are able to reinforce and defend the bomb quicker if they die than they could B site.

If anyone has any suggestions or input to help make this a better guide I would be glad to put your suggestions into this guide. Negativity will not be tolerated and it doesn't get anyone anywhere. However, there is a difference between constructive criticism and responses such as; "that's shit"

Thanks and I hope it helps, I know a lot of it is common knowledge but if this helps someone thats good.

Wow dude, great guide. I didn't even realize that people liked to get on the wing of the downed plane until I read this... Then I went and proceeded to pick them off. Lol

I meant to do this but i forgot and then didn't get round to it, i'll do it soon, promise.
*edit*: numbered them, a bit dodgy but you get the jist. My next guide will be much more clear and thoughtout in terms of design.

the images are scans from the MW2 Official Strategy Guide by Brady Games. There is a thread in this guides section that has all of the scans of the MP maps on here:
Map overviews, but the scans are a bit lower res than mine.

I have yet to experience a game where a team that captures A first in Demolition has won.

Capturing B first is absolutely crucial in winning on this map.

Agree on the guns, one thing though... M1014 when defending B is the shiznit. Cannot go past it.

ithis is cool never seen it before. are there others?
JUst some additions to consider

About extended mags. It's helpful, but not THAT much. Mainly, i would use it on the AA-12, the M1014 or the Scar-H. On any other weapon, a different attatchment would be more useful.

For domination. I find that the flag in the poppy fields is the easiest one to cap. Just lie down, and you basically got the flag. Always check the little window areas around it though.
Flag A (the one in a ditch) is also easy to cap. If you see someone capping it, throw a grenade at it and the person will most likely die. The ditch does provide cover, but while lying prone, you cannot move in that area. The people then try to move, get "Pron blocked" and die. Usually.
The flag in the cliff part is the hardest to cap. The only cover is this little corner, but its really obvious. However, many people dont go around this part of the map so you MAY be safe.

I find that in domination, people tend to fight in the plane area. There are the snipers in the windows around and the cliff, the couple of people on the wings, but most people are on the ground fighting next to or in the plane. This is normal domination, not ground war.

just my input if you are still doing this

What a great guide! You even highlighted many of the main camping spots err.. "defensive positions" lol.

Nice guide! FTW

I just read over the entire guide, and i will re-read over it in the future. This guide covers most aspects of Afghan, and the demolition section helped, although one thing which i might suggest. Instead of using FAL, use the FAMAS, it has better accuracy and less recoil, and fires in 3 round bursts. Just my tidbit. Good Guide

Good Day From Blue~

You forgot the camp spot just on top of the cavern entrance wich is accessible by the plane wing, there is not much cover but you see about all the map and no one expect you there.
