Default Guide to Search and Destroy

I left a lot of choices in these builds, because everyone has their favorite assault rifle and backup shotgun. Fitting builds to your play style, whether it be a stealthy “Ghost” build or a powerful stopping power + grenade launcher build is very important to being effective, especially in Search & Destroy, where dying means game over. Play with these. Find out which combos get you the most kills. These builds are specifically for Search & Destroy, since it is a very different style of gameplay from the rest of Modern Warfare 2, and requires more thought and strategy. I’ve got a build listed for both the Offensive side of the bomb, and the Defensive.

Defense:
Primary: SCAR-H, M-16, ACR/M4A1. Silencer, grenade launcher, or heartbeat sensor.
Secondary: Your favorite shotgun here -- akimbo rangers, AA-12, etc. Note that this will make you show up on the minimap -- if you use them, move quickly out of the area.
Equipment: Claymore.
Perk 1: Bling Pro.
Perk 2: Cold Blooded Pro W/ SCAR or M16, Stopping Power Pro W/ACR or M4A1.
Perk 3: Ninja Pro.
Special Grenade: Stun grenade x2.
  • Take a look at the overall map picture and look at the routes that the offensive team has to take to get to both bombsites. You’ll notice quite a few chokepoints that the designers incorporated. You can either decide to rush one of those chokepoints, drop a claymore, and fall back, or you can pick up a defensive lane that covers one of the routes and plant your claymore near the bombsite. One option is planting a claymore at one route and watching another one -- and you can listen for your claymore going off or a flashbang disabling your claymore to tell if someone is going that way.
  • The most important part of Search and Destroy is having good situational awareness. You need to understand which bombsite is getting the pressure, the routes to and from the bombsites, and the general vicinity of your team mates. Never leave a bombsite completely undefended -- at least plant a claymore or take a quick peek at it now and again to make sure there’s no pressure on it. Spreading out your team across both bomb sites helps, so if there’s clearly a target the offense is going for, you guys can hold them off long enough to get reinforcements from the other bomb site (and hopefully they flank the attackers or use their grenade launchers).
  • Being stealthy is key here, since there are only 4-6 enemies total. Don’t get impatient with this game type! Kill count doesn’t matter, and you only have one life to spend per round, so you have to stay alive as long as possible to make the most impact.
  • This is why we use cold blooded and ninja pro, and potentially a heartbeat sensor. Don’t blindingly trust your heartbeat sensor though, since you will probably run into others that also use ninja pro. A good tactic is to pay direct attention to your heartbeat sensor when you hear it beep -- that way you are only looking at it when there is a definite enemy. Using a headset or surround sound system is important in Search and Destroy also, because you can find a good hiding spot near one of your bomb sites and listen closely for incoming enemies, and either sneak up and knife them, or kill them while they are planting the bomb. This gives you some extra points, too.
  • You can also use stopping power with your SCAR or M-16, even though I don’t outright recommend it, because it will give you the one-on-one gunfight advantage. The reason why I don’t recommend it, is one-on-one gunfights are rare in Search and Destroy. Since it’s a stealth game type, most of your kills will be from behind, beside, grenade launchers, claymores, and sneaky tactics.
  • If you find yourself gunfighting for the majority of your kills, definitely think about equipping a high-damage gun with stopping power added, but keep in mind you are much, much more vulnerable to UAV's. You can also counteract some of this by using a silencer, which combined with stopping power, is a very useful tool in Search and Destroy. The silencer helps tame your recoil and keep you off the radar, and the stopping power counteracts the damage loss of a silencer.

Offense:
Primary: SCAR-H, M-16, ACR/M4A1. Silencer, grenade launcher, or heartbeat sensor.
Secondary: Your favorite shotgun here -- akimbo rangers, AA-12, etc. Note that this will make you show up on the minimap -- if you use them, move quickly out of the area.
Equipment: Semtex (use this on the riot shield guys).
Perk 1: Bling Pro or Marathon (to beat the defenders to the objective and give them a rude surprise in the face in a location they don’t expect to see you at).
Perk 2: Cold Blooded Pro W/ SCAR or M16, Stopping Power Pro W/ACR or M4A1
Perk 3: SitRep (This is to avoid claymores).
Special Grenade: Stun grenade x2.
Post your experiences with these builds and your own favorites! We’d love to hear how you succeed in Search & Destroy.
  • For offense, you are going to be getting to a bombsite in your most effective way. If you are a great runner and gunner, you need to rush that bombsite and beat the defenders to the chokepoints, so you can surprise them with a burst from your weapon. If you are better with the silenced weapon and circling around the objective, then do it -- but be careful of those claymores. Do Not attempt the same pattern of rushing more than twice in a match. Don’t become a predictable player. Pick different paths to the bombsite, pick different buildings to run though, and keep your eyes open.
  • Use the grenade launcher to clear those camp spots while avoiding risk. Remember that situational awareness I was talking about -- see where your teammates are going, and where they are encountering resistance. Circle around those points and flank them if possible, but keep your eyes open so you don’t trip those claymores or walk right by an auto-shottie camper. Check your corners before going into buildings -- remember, you only have one life, and one chance to plant that bomb, and the defense’s job is basically just to camp, and camp really well. Use your heartbeat sensor if you have one, use your sitrep on the claymores, or stun grenades if you don’t have sitrep. Pull out your shotgun before you walk through a door into a building. Use your headphones, they are invaluable in Search and Destroy.
  • It’s often most effective if the entire team all rushes to the same bombsite together, clears it out, and sets up a defensive perimeter with camp spots to defend the bomb as it’s counting down. Don’t waste your time splitting the team in half to each bomb site, because your odds of success plummet. You can try to send one loud obnoxious grenadier to one bombsite to start a ruckus, and everyone else with stealth builds to the main bombsite you are going for, but don’t let your team get slowed down otherwise you will most likely be flanked by a knifer with marathon and lightweight.
  • Remember knifing does not show up on radar, so that player can take out half your team before you realize what happened to them. Keep your eyes open, and watch the kill/death ticker for what weapons people are using so you can counteract them appropriately. Use your semtex and stun grenades! With only one life, it's important to use all of your tools and be very, very efficient with the little that you have on hand, since you only get one shot at it. Don't worry about unloading a whole clip at one enemy, just do it. One kill is a huge deal -- if you eliminate one player, and it's a 5v4, you've gained a significant advantage.
  • Stay calm, don't get worked up. Take your time, check your corners, and don't let yourself get frustrated and do something stupid. You will die if you get impatient and run around like regular Team Deathmatch. Keep your head about you and work to your strengths at all times. If you are at a disadvantage and you know it, get out of there. Get yourself into a situation where you have the upper-hand.

There is so much wrong with this, I don't know where to start.

Advice on classes is terrible.

The rest of the guide is pretty obvious and/or irrelevant.

Class suggestions are poor.

Silenced Tar or UMP ftw. Or are these "too noob" to use?

Also, the lack of mention of doing 360/540/720/900's before every Game Winning Killcam is a huge thing to miss.

The classes that I provided were suggestions, nothing more. Whatever class you do great in, feel most comfortable with, etc. is obviously your best choice. But for the people that spend a lot of time playing one specific game mode apart from Search and Destroy are probably wondering what a good class is to use. Personally, I find these classes great and when I use them I usually did very well. I apologize if you don't find the classes very reasonable, but at least provide some background information on why you find these classes bad examples before you say anything at all.

great job rising. I think your advice is sound. I prefer smg and ninja pro on defense and offense but that doesn't make your suggestion of ar's and sitrep wrong... don't sweat the negativity... i'm finding oneinchwunda is slowly but surely sucking the fun out of this whole site. Would it kill you to post something positive for once?

IMO even though it's got decent info, it's still kinda wall of texty, maybe add images of sample routes or something? i dunno, maybe it's just me... i still feel like novels are ghey and picture books rock, so thats probably where that comes from
