I've decided to do a "side mission" and complete the FAMAS Mastery Challenge. I'm on the last leg, which is "Get 40 bullet penetration kills with FMJ attached". My curent setup is Bling Pro (Heartbeat Sensor and FMJ), Stopping Power, and Steady Aim Pro.

I've played 2 Free-For-All (Invasion and Terminal) matches using the set-up above, scored 42 kills, and only 1 kill was a penetration kill.

Does anyone have any tips for improving my chances at penetration kills? Is Highrise (with it's cubicles and thin walls) the promised land for this challenge?

Should I just expect that this will take 80 matches to complete?

I think your best shot is at Favela, lots of CQC fighting that will result in shooting through walls. But hey, it's going to be be tough.

i find those challenges alot easier on certain gametypes...

domination/headquarters/ground wars and regular tdm's all work well.

I find free-for-all to be alot of kills face to face rather than through surfaces as you are on your own against 7 other people.

Don't bother with a HBS. Just play normally but shoot people through walls instead of in the face if only a part of your opponent is exposed. There's no trick to it at all aside from the ability to do that consistently (hard habit to get into if you're used to plinking people in the head if only their head is exposed).

An HBS is one of those examples of a theoretical advantage but it's actually not. I'm going with ViS and second that habit change suggestion.

I'd recommend playing HQ. It helps if you are familiar with exactly how the HQ are set up on each map, but the point is that you will know where the enemy is behind a wall because they have to be near the laptop to "capture" the HQ.

So let's say the laptop is up against a wall inside a shack. Well, you don't even have to bother going in there with flashbangs or whatnot. Instead you can lay down from a position outside and take advantage of your FMJ, firing intermittently towards where the HQ is, right through the wall. If your "X" comes up in the crosshairs, you know you hit paydirt, so to speak, so let loose with a couple of bursts to get the kill.

I realize some may come with a criticism that this is using an objectives-based game to rack up kills for a personal challenge, but to that I say this: ultimately the kills do advance the objective of this game by killing the enemies who are attempting to capture, or have captured, the HQ.

You could get like 3-4 FMJ kills a round this way, and besides HQ nets a lot of XP and it's fun to boot.

Agreed, when people use HBS's they tend to rely on them a bit to much rather than look for the enemy they always look at the HBS even though anyone of the other team could have Ninja on.

I play FFA to get mine, I find it gives you the most kills the the shortest amount of time anyway, the ideal map for it is Highrise tbh, just camp in the side with all the booths and thin wooden walls. The booths are just low enough so you can see people's heads over them but high enough so you have a lot of area to shoot through to get body shots.

Also, whenever you stumble upon someone who doesn't know you're there and you'd ordinarily knife or headshot them take a look around for any nearby walls you can line up a shot through. I can normally get all 40 in an hour or 2 of play.

I'm hearing "ditch the HBS" from many of you, do you recommend using a different attachment to go with FMJ (Thermal perhaps?), or are you suggesting dropping Bling Pro altogther (for Slight of Hand maybe)?

Depends what you feel comfortable with really, if you don't want to be seen use the silencer though it will decrease your range making it harder, if you want to try and flank them use marathon, play around and see which one helps most.

I would say you have 3 options with that deano, depending on your preferences.

you have:

Bling with FMJ + a sight of some kind (red dot, acog, thermal etc.)

Bling with FMJ + a silencer (stealthy class option so you can plan FMJ kills)

Sleight of hand with iron sights.

With the majority of assault rifles id go for Bling with a sight. Usually (ok 100%) red dot. I find alot of the iron sights difficult to use, except for maybe the AK47.

If you feel confident enough with the regular sights (this applies to when using smgs as well) then go sleight of hand with the regular sights.

the silence option is another option entirely, which may benefit you if you play with a stealthy type style.. although it may gimp the Famas as its a 3round burst gun.

Ive gotten two mastery challenges complete so far, the UMP45 (SMG) and the RPD (LMG) i almost got it with the intervention, MP5K and M4A1 but wanted to prestige again as soon as i hit 70.

I would use FAMAS with FMJ, Scavenger, Stopping Power, Commando. The iron sights for the FAMAS are very nice, I don't think you'd need to use Bling. Terminal is also another great map to get bullet penetration.

Thats a setup i use too and its very effective , try and wean yourself of bling , get used to the iron sights and use scavenger instead , the only setup i use bling now is TAR with silencer and FMJ..

Bling is a great "novelty" perk but unnecessary really. I much prefer to use Scavenger, can't beat never running out of ammo and having an infinte supply of semtex, grenades, launcher ammo...

Fully agreed, unfortunately Bling Pro is awesome for playing Handguns/Machine Pistols only so I have to play Bling classes occasionally.

I completed my FAMAS FMJ kills today using:

FAMAS+FMJ
AT4-HS/Stinger (unlocked Stinger halfway through)
Frags (I would use Semtex but I was doing Frag challenges also)
Flashbangs
Scavenger
Stopping Power
Steady Aim

Steady Aim is another good third perk choice since you can basically kill with one burst, handy when you are straffing. I use Commando PRO because I tend to leap out of high areas.

I unlocked Bling PRO the first time arround and having a Bling option for secondary weapons is great also. Now that I prestiged I haven't used it, I'll stick to my trusty Scavenger.

Yea man just play your game. Your scores are gonna get worse if you start changing your playstyle from what your comfortable with. Just keep playing it will come.

Having abit of problems with the AK iron sights, just becouse it jumps so much that the "iron" hides what you were actually shooting at. The other ones i havent had that problem at all with and never really "needed" to use red dot.

(Btw, when i use a sight, its always red dot. I Just dont see the point in the Holographic? Bigger dot, more graphics around to block you're view and i seem to get a "glare" from sun on it making it even harder to see at times.)

On-topic: Scavenger Pro is almost a must for me these days. Running out of ammo after a couple of kills is worthless :/

I'm currently working on my bullet pen kills with the intervention. Any tips on bullet pen with a sniper rifle? I ran through my m16 in 4-5 hours but this one is taking me considerably longer. About 3 hours in I have 5/40

Again, my thanks to all. Here's an update: I ditched the HBS and tried Thermal. It was pretty bad, since thermal doesn't see through walls ( I mistakenly thought it would), I went 6/20 then 5/22 and got no penetration kills, ugh. Switched back to the HBS.

My successful adjustments: 1) I tried to stay in the center of the cubicles in Highrise, and kept my aim low (waist down), the FMJs usually found SOMETHING to go through to get a penetration kill. 2) In open outdoor areas your instinct is to NOT let something like a tree get between you and your target- I reversed that and TRIED to get things between me and the target, and had success as well.

Best discovery: Shooting people through the wall in the center of the bunker on Wasteland (HBS was VERY helpful for this).

I'm currently at 20/40 penetration kills for the challenge.

I played Hardcore to get my ACR & M16 extended mags, silencer & FMJ did the job.

On Terminal there are these two chairs by the Emergency exit in the plane and behind those chairs is a wall, I would go in between those and camp on demolition, got like 10 Bullet Penetration kills inone game.

shoot at everything that moves. normally i wont shoot if i dont have a good shot but when trying to get FMJ done i just shoot anyways.

and i would definately use scavenger because you go through way more ammo.
