Default Full Match Videos: Commentary or music?

So, Im basicly thinking to start recording full matches & put them up on youtube.
I just finished recording my first match, though I can't decide, would you rather prefer some music under it? Or some commentary.

Also, if somebody who knows alot about sony vegas could give me a detailled rendering option setup, I'd really appreciate it.
My last video wasn't to big sizewise, but the quality wasn't really on par with video's that I see other people here publishing like Ninja's recent vid or just in general, youtube channels.

Either suits me, but if your doing somting special its better to commentate how you do it or explain why. However, questions like that can be asked in the comments. and sometimes music can be terrible. So i suggest starting with commentaries.

In regards to music, it depends on your choice but I liked your last stuff.

A mix of both would be sweet if you have the patience to do the text based commentary like Ninja's. I quite liked that. Most voice over commentary sounds as though people are trying to find stuff to say the whole time, when it just isn't needed, and that doesn't happen with text - just pop up relevant stuff as it happens.

ever watched starcraft being commentated :| ?

if you're just playing a regular kind of game with nothing really that special in it i would say music would suffice.

as far as commentating goes generally explaining your movements and why you made this decision e.g I knew there was a person at x location because i heard them and so i flanked via y location, it might not always be like that but sort of explaining movements and decisions is all you really need to do unless you're trying a specific thing.

I think S&D and more timing and strategy based game modes like it are better suited to commentary. Whilst Demo and Dom generally turn into frag fests thus music may suit it better.

I must have repeated myself like 5 times.

I don't really have the patience to do it like Ninja. My main issue with commentating is, that unlike other videos that I watch, I really can't seem to fill my whole clip.
It's only a 7min demo game, but I really can't find shit to talk about the whole time >.>

Yeh, I tend to like SC being commentated though. But that's probably because I understand jack shit about the game since i never played it.

Im thinking to just put up a music & a commentated version for this time and see which one people like most.

Ingame sound with text commentary. There's never enough going on in FPS to provide good casting opportunities. Starcraft, on the other hand...

It boils down to..... Whats your reason for making the vids? Education, showing off, or a combination of the two? Both are good reasons to make vids.

I think people could learn a bunch from watching some vids of you play with or without commentary, but commentary to explain why you did certain things would be much more helpful. Seeing you do something helps but your explaining why you did it imo is more important.

That said, adding commentary is more like holding their hands and walking them through it rather than letting them learn though observation.

It also allows the viewer to enjoy the game with all original sounds, which I like. I check it out later on when I get home. For montages, music is cool because it plays/works with all the editing.

I agree, the Annotations at first are very frustrating to work with. The easiest way IMO to do it, is just to have your mouse pointer on the annotations button, and when something interesting happens, just click and type whatever.

I usually try to point out little fun facts as filler, why I did this, what mistakes the enemy and myself made to get killed, class tips, there's just a bunch of little things you can add to keep the viewer entertained when there isn't much going on in gameplay.

Commentary is very nice on the other hand, I prefer it when people have LIVE commentary, when is recorded with a program at the same time the video is being recorded. Post-video commentary sounds too stale and dry for my taste. It's funny when someone messes up and you can hear the anger in their voice, lol.

Onto Sony Vegas, unless you are planning to add commentary or music, I suggest you not use it all, since uploading it to Youtube in its raw format will provide you with the best quality, since re-compressing the file to another format tends to degrade it a little bit. However, if you plan to add music or commentary, try these settings below:

First, go into Vegas, and drop your video on the timeline. Click on that arrow that I outlined in red. This will bring up your video settings, such as resolution, quality, etc. Now..

Click on the folder outlined in red, find your video, then double click it. Now your video settings are matched for optimal rendering and quality. One thing to note is to set the "Full-resolution rendering quality" to Best.

Once you've added music or commentary, go to File -> Render As. Name it whatever, and set the format to MP4. I know a lot of Youtube tutorials recommend .WMV, however we're using MP4 as it provides better quality for gaming. AVI is the highest you can get, however the file size is HUGE, and Youtube won't accept it.

Click on Custom, and follow those settings. On the Audio tab, set the quality to Best, sample rate of 48,000 hZ or above, and the bit-rate to 128 BPS. Project tab, set it to Best, this is also important.

Hope it helps. If it doesn't work well for you, feel free to experiment with different formats.

Ingame sound + music + commentary. Just turn the music down for the commentary parts.

I'd also like to point out that quality mostly depends on your capturing source. Assuming you use Fraps (since its a popular recording software), I found a tutorial on Youtube which teaches you how to record your gameplay in a crystal clear, HD 720P format.

YouTube - How To | Record in HD with Fraps

I record with a HD capturing device which provides the grounds for quality. It's nice to see that Fraps has that option as well.

I pretty much always prefer commentary, you could have quiet music underneath though for the less interesting parts that don't require commentary.

I found YouTube - HD Rendering Using Sony Vegas 8.0 pretty handy when I was trying to figure out how to render in HD properly. You might find it useful.

I say music w/ popups or captions

9 times out of 10, commentators have annoying voices

I lol'd at the pic. I would record and commentate but unfortunately I have no capturing device. I would buy a hauppauge but being a student I am obviously poor, also they cannot be bought here (Aus) iirc and I have to ship in from the US of A (great success) and I wouldn't want to spend money on a non HD device as ultimately HD devices will become cheaper and more available.

I've been meaning to get one but atm I have so many things I need to buy before that. How much $US are they?

I might get one mid year and then the commentary shall be yours my dear nibbles
