iv always been a pretty decent player but i only got myself my own xbox about half a year ago (took me a while i know) and i just got live about a month after i got an xbox, and then yesterday i went to my buddy's house and hes had an xbox way longer than me but never live and we went 1v1 yesterday (mw2 of course) and i was just owning him ridiculously badly i almost felt bad at how bad i kicked his ass if i wasn't laughing so hard lol im guessing its cuz of the live because hes never had it even though hes had an xbox for way longer than me. i just thought it was kinda funny how a few months of live makes you better quicker than over a year of just the xbox by itself

Whilst playing live you figure out tactics, good classes, people's habits, while improving your awareness and reaction time.
Plus it's more fun, you can't play the campaign for 15 days worth of play time. You spend more time playing the game on live. |

Both of the above are correct.
Lots of game time, even campaign (especially veteran), makes you good at the game and familiar with the guns. But playing live allows you to really improve upon your tactics and reaction time.

As they said, conditioning to play against other players is the key to success when playing at LAN events (even if it is just a split screen party at a buddy's house).
I remember the first time I played MW2. I hadn't played a FPS game in either 2 or 3 years, but thanks to the many years prior to that... after about an hour of getting accustomed to the PS3 controls I was destroying my buddies 1v2. Getting familiar with the human factor... picking up on player tendencies, reading your opponent, and in fact predicting their next move before they even make it... you don't learn that playing by yourself in a campaign. |

Weapons also behave different in multi player. Mostly they are weaker, but you also only have one attachment, etc..
Knowing how to use perks effectively makes a big difference too. |

I think its pretty obvious that playing against real people online is always going to make you better than playing against AI. Real people think for themselves about the best thing to do in a situation, whereas AI is programmed to react to certain scenarios in the same way every time it occurs. In single player for example, it is perfectly possible to sneak past AI on several levels whereas trying it against real people would be far far harder.

Single and multiplayer are two completely different games. Of course you'll have a massive advantage if he's never played one of them before.
