Default Surviving with a Sniper rifle?

Anyone have any tips on surviving with a sniper rifle, except for camping. I've watched a few you tube videos (commentarys not montages) but I still dont really get how to survive.

also sometimes I get a hitmarker and the guy doesnt die or I get my crosshair on the guy shoot but I get killed first, is that just lag?

So in other words you want to run and gun with the sniper. Might work against total randoms but run into a 6 man team and yeah they will call out where you are running through. The way that the other weapons are designed and coded into the game in a run and gun game they draw and fire faster than the sniper. Thus your survival rate is not good. The whole Youtube hypermania of run and gun quick scoping sniper videos crates a team of snipers who run around maps get drilled and can't figure out why they are losing encounters over and over.

/rant

There are few people who do well running and gunning with the sniper. Especially when the other team posts up and camps their asses off. And exactly what is wrong with camping with the sniper and providing support to the team?

"Tactical camping" is the easiest tactic to use which is moving around the map but taking cover instead of running around like a headless chicken which is really just common sense when you think about it.

Running & gunning is definitely possible. I do it because I like the rush but my KDR suffers (stays positive though).

Basically don't be afraid to hardscope/dragscope & don't be afraid to quickscope when you're in a tight spot.
If people start bitching then you're doing it right.

ya I dont mean run and gun, I notice that even with sleight of hand scoping with a sniper is slower, but when I try to run from one area to another for instance I get picked of by some guy behind me or I bump into an enemy while Im going, ppl on the commentary even though not aways seem to be able to avoid this, is there like a certain time you should run or something?

If you are running into people a lot you can just pull out your secondary when going through tight areas. Also use pistols as secondaries because of draw time. If you miss or get a hitmarker they can really save you.

Watch the minimap and where your teamates are. If they are on one side of the map sorta bunched up there the other team is eaither posting up on the other side or about to come up the opposite side because teams usually send a few flankers to cause disruption. So expect people from that direction. Run UAV as a kill streak to pick up on enemies. Also don't try to run across the map run from cover to cover and take a look from behind the cover to see if you have a shot. Also I dunno how much you play but most maps have established routes and camping spots and you can take great advantage of this fact by picking people off. And on croweded maps when you are ready to run perhaps run with a secondary out since there are more versitile when it comes to quick draw encounters.

There will always be BS deaths where the guy turns the corner and herp a derp he kills you. People spawn behind you and kill you its just MW2 we all get killed in a BS matter and just respawn and get back at it.

This, or use the Spas with grip. I wrecked Afghan earlier today using the Spas as primary and then picking off people at B with the sniper rifle. Either have a buddy with you to keep your area secure (in the instance of Afghan, Fubar and I were all over the cliff, doing a great job of holding C and capping dudes as they came from caves), or take one or two out, then move around the outside of the map until it's safe to resume the position.

I'd recommend using the Rafficas for your secondary. Now, personally I tend to play fairly aggressively even while sniping. Yes, I will try for quickscopes IF it becomes necessary, but don't be a youtube hero: if you miss the first quickscope swap to your secondary and kill the fucker (drop shot if you have to).

Learn to be fast with your shots. Practice dragshotting people so you don't have to full on hardscope for extended periods of time. With all the angles and varying elevations in most maps, sitting around staring at a spot for multiple seconds will end in death.

I prefer WA2000 and EBR to the others, EBR is great of you want to keep mobile, I find the WA good for drag/hardscope as it has low recoil and good fire rate, but then I only play hardcore so it's pretty much 1 shot kill with any sniper, I use EBR + M93 and WA2000 + P2000. Both work well in hardcore. Having played this game for about 25 online days now I can say that I wouldn't bother too much playing sniper in normal/softcore mode, stick with an AR and a shotgun apart from Wasteland perhaps. I play to get least deaths rather than most kills, I personally find it more strategy based that way -and yes I can run and gun OK in normal mode so it's not any kind of wimpout, just a personal choice

Default Re: Surviving with a Sniper rifle?

My sniping set up that I successfully use is:

Barret .50 cal w/ fmj
Magnum w/ akimbo (yes the raficas are better stat wise but i suck ass with them and raep with the magums)
Claymore
Stuns
Slight of hand
Cold Blooded
Ninja

It works very well on most maps. Cold Blooded makes you a pain in the ass to see with thermal plus you are safe from most kill streaks. Ninja makes it so you don't appear on h-beat. Just aim for the head for the 1 hit KO. As for tactics. Only camp if your team has your flank covered, if not don't stay in any place for more than 2 or 3 kills. Lastly try to stay on the edges since you will have less places to be shot from.

Some times I like to go totally silent so I will use the M21 EBR w/ silencer and replace Slight of Hand with Scavenger. Two quick shots to anywhere is a kill and there is no way to see you on radar. Doesn't work at super long ranges like the barret and intervention though.

Every so often you will have a group of idiots that are getting mauled game after game but they stay in the lobby. At that point you start running stupid shait to see how far you can push the limit before you lose.

PP2000 w/ ext. mags is like a mini smg. High fire rate, low recoil, and good damage.

Raffica w/ RDS is like a mini M16.

I'm assuming you have stopping power on both of these.

SitRep Pro will help you TONS in hearing people near you.

Just want to reiterate, don't bother using a sniper rifle other than the Intervention or Barrett. Doing so will just gimp yourself in certain scenarios. An example:

Looking down the long narrow hallway on Terminal you see an enemy jump from one side to the other. With either of the two I mentioned, you can flick to him even through the wall and nail a kill (assuming FMJ and a headshot). With anything else, you may wind up with a hitmarker.

Assume your window to kill the enemy is made up of milliseconds, and as a result disregard the semi auto snipers as a waste of space.
