Default Sony Vegas Pro Question

So this seems to be the software of choice that most of you use for your videos. My question - how did you learn how to use it? It seems extremely complicated and the 480+ page manual is complicated at best. Ive checked out many videos on youtube already and even they seem a bit advanced. Any help is appreciated.

Just view YouTube tutorials. That's how I learned. Also you don't have to learn every trick in the book, if you want to learn a new effect just Google up a tutorial on it and there will be one.

The general things you need to learn to do is cut clips, speed them up, slow them down, settings, and what kind of file to render your video as.

Cutting Clips - Simply click and hold the beginning or end of a clip to cut it into a piece that you want.

Speeding and Slowing - Hold Ctrl while clicking and dragging your clip.

Settings - Depend greatly on your capturing device. It's best to match media settings by clicking the blue arrow on the top left of the video preview box, then clicking the yellow manila folder, then double clicking on the video you are editing, to match the video settings to keep the best quality and rendering speed possible.

Rendering - Render it as an Main Concept MP4 video. 1280x720 resolution, no field order, 4 reference frames, and bit-rate is dependent on your recording.

You'd be amazed at how many tutorials there are on YouTube, you can learn a lot from them, I sure did, and also with Photoshop as well.

Well start out with a more basic program. I have vegas on my computer, but I use windows movie maker still because I know how to use it. If it's your first time using an editing program, start out with something basic 'til you get the ropes. And everyone that says wmm is junk doesn't know how to use it right ha ha.

Same as voodoo.

Most of the stuff I just worked out. It's actually pretty simple as far as adding FX goes. Just getting it looking good is what is hard and takes time.

WMM is rubbish. no ifs or buts.
I was taught how to use Premiere at uni and tbh they're all pretty similar. If only my computer was fast enough to utilise them effectively.

I love WMM and consider myself and advanced user but it is just so basic with what it can do. I eventually want to get into masking, keyframing and rotoscoping with Vegas, but I seem to be having trouble with just setting up the layout of my workstation lol.
