While this remains unconfirmed until we can get official word from Activision,
Eurogamer is reporting that the
Guitar Hero franchise has been "axed."
No other details were offered, but it wasn't the only surprising aspect of the report. According to the story, "severe layoffs" have been inflicted upon 2008 acquisition FreeStyleGames, the developer of
DJ Hero. Additionally, the upcoming
True Crime: Hong Kong has been canceled and its developer, United Front Games, has been shut down.
GamesIndustry.biz has also filed a similar report. Activision will now focus on its
Call of Duty and Blizzard businesses (
StarCraft and
World of Warcraft are specifically mentioned).
