Play for Japan was one of the many attempts to raise money for relief efforts in Japan following the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck in March. After kicking off on March 16 the campaign raised more than $100,000 in less than a month, it was announced today.
"When we launched Play For Japan we knew the support from our peers would be there," said the Play For Japan committee in a press release. "We are blown away with how quickly individuals and corporations contributed, and to the degree in which they did. It's impossible to express our gratitude enough. What we hope now is that the awareness continues. With any tragedy like this, the hardest thing is to sustain support once the event is out of the news. It will take a lot of hard work and possibly a decade to rebuild the country."
In addition to promoting other attempts to raise money, Play for Japan helped to arrange eBay auctions for a wide variety of videogame-related items including everything from a Miyamoto-signed DS system to a life-size statue of Modern Warfare 2's Ghost. It's currently working with composer Akira Yamaoka (of Silent Hill fame) on Play for Japan: The Album. He's collaborating with a number of other noteworthy industry individuals to create the album.
