xbox 360 arcade + 20gb hdd = epic FAIL!!11!1!

Bought 2 of these things now, new from different people.
Both have E68 errors.
wtf?

Either the 360 won't boot properly if the HDD is in, or I place it in once it's booted & then it crashes or, if I'm really lucky, I get to play 3 minutes of Carnival or Storm or whatever before it freezes & informs me that the game disk needs cleaning with a fu@k6^£ cloth!
