I have the same router as you Gerry (or close enough to it). Try this...

Port Forwarding Call of Duty - Modern Warfare 2 on the Netgear DG834PN

If you're playing on PS3, you'll need to open these ports as well...

Port Forwarding PS3 Call of Duty - Modern Warfare 2 on the Netgear DG834PN

And for X360, open these ports, as well as the first set of ports...

Port Forwarding XBOX360 Call of Duty - Modern Warfare 2 on the Netgear DG834PN

The instructions are fairly easy to follow, so I hope it helps.

If this isn't working for you, I believe the only other option you have, is to put your gaming IP address into the DMZ (Demilitarised Zone). By doing that, you are putting your system in front of your firewall, so there's no security. If you're playing on either console, it's not such a big deal, and it's the quickest way to open all ports and improve the network connection to your system.

If you play on PC, I wouldn't use the DMZ.

If you're having trouble, I'll try to help further...

I would think the ports I posted above, will work for all MW2 online modes, including Spec Ops. Give it a try and see what happens...

Try updating your Router's firmware, my Netgear was having similar problems but a firmware update solved it.

where exactly is that jumper-when i open up my router i see blue category with services, settings, options etc ,a white box in the middle which has infomation about my ip adress and a second blue bocx on the right which shows some information about the router

First of all don't open your Router, that's not going to help.

To upgrade your firmware go here and download the file, then go into your router's control panel, there'll be a tab sayignn something like "Router Upgrade", click on that then locate the file you just downloaded.

Mine still fluctuates very occasionally but a restart of MW2 or Steam normally sorts it out.

Glad I could help.
