Hey all.. so.. ive recently bought Call of Duty 4 : Modern Warfare 2
Its all good and running, but obviously i cant play it on the resolution that fits my screen and should be supported by my graphics card My relevant specs OS - Windows 7 GFX Card - ATI Radeon HD 4850 CPU - AMD Phenom II X3 720 Processor, 2809 Mhz, 3 Cores Motherboard - ASUS M4A78T-E BIOS Version - American Megatrends Inc. 1402, 20-05-2009 RAM - 4 GB my screen is a LG Flatron W2261V - 22 Inch So i want to play MW2 on 1920 x 1080 resolution, but when i get 5-10min into the game, maybe even before 5 minutes, i get crashes, random crashes, random places, it looks like its a graphic card problem as it gives me grey stripes on the whole screen. Ive been looking around the network for days trying to find a solution. Now im posting here hoping someone is willing to help me Thanks all Appreciated //Broadway14 |

Sounds like a regular GFX-card-overheating-issue.
Has it been OC'd at all? Even a factory OC? My amazingly-high-end cooling on my 4830 is useless when OC'd so even if your cooling is amazing and temps are low it can still happen. What sort of temp is your GFX card getting to? the fact that it's so quick suggests a semi-broken fan? I'm assuming the 4850 isn't passive (i.e. has a fan?)

Hey mate, thanks a lot for posting / helping, i was wondering for the first time yesterday if my card was overheating, it still might be, i havent found a software to check what actually goes wrong when the crash happens, ive ofc tried to go outa the game while im playing, then the temperatures is about 70 - 72 C
Thanks for the reply, Things ive tried so far: Reinstalling drivers a LOT Flashing BIOS Deleting Sound Driver Lots more, but these are the important |

70 odd by the time you've quit the game is a tad high. Is the 4850 a refference design (tiny fan with a long thin wide box over it) or does it have a more substantial cooler? Does the 4850 have a fean and heatsink or just a big heatsink?
Use something like GPUz or Rivatuner to log temperatures. Rivatuner is more complicated to use but has more to offer. GPUz is much simpler but make sure you set temp readout to "max temp" not "current temp." You can use CPUid HWmonitor for CPU temps, PSU stability etc. Unless something actually crashes (not a GFX driver, screen would go black for about 10 seconds before returning to windows) there won't be anything in windows error logs. Does this happen with all games or just MW2? Does it happen with modern, demanding, games like Far Cry 2 & ARMA etc or just MW2 and older titles? Priority 1 is to find temps during gaming. Priority 2 is to rule out software by hopefully getting artifacts on a different game or even a GFX card stress tester like ATItool, GPU test or Furmark (recommended)

Hello Abc, i tested out the GPU today, it was at 85 c, then i maximized the fan speed and it went to 65 c, it still crashes, i dont think the issue is heating, also, thanks for your very nice post, also im not sure by the design as its turned upsite down so im not sure, but i think its a flat board with a round circle with a cooler in the middle..
Anyway, could we speak over MSN (my MSN is Rallem123@hotmail.com) or something ? You seem like a really nice guy and i really wanna get to communicate a bit easier with the pro's, thanks a lot for your answer MUCH appreciated, i'll do a thanks (on the thread) ![]() //Broadway14 Last edited by Broadway14; 02-22-2010 at 11:29 AM. |

Big round circle in middle with big round fan in middle is good
The original coolers on the 4800's were very hot and very noisy.I still think the best idea is to download and run Furmark from here (click the "stability test" box before you hit "go") What it does is create an amusingly odd spinning object. Sounds silly but the spinning hairy-donought thing is incredibly details thus really works your graphics card into a sweat. You then leave it for 10 mins and scan for artifacts. You can't really move on until you eliminate instability. 65 might not sound hot, but as I said my uber-awesome cooling couldn't handle a 10% OC (although I have a suspicion it's the utterly C R A P drivers, not my hardware) even when temps were no more than 65. Also it is possible to do semi-permanent damage to a GFX card if it runs unstable for a while. My 8600GT turned green once, literally the whole screen just stopped bothering with red & blue... Steam would be the most convinient since the much-better Xfire doesn't get used much these days as I don't play non MW2 games online (although I did buy COD UO the other day of which the excellant single player, laughably, is as fun as MW2 but much less annoying) COD 1 and UO between them have something ridiculous like 50 odd missions too, just shows how multiplayer has taken over (and IMO partly ruined) the COD series. Sure MP of pre-MW2 games was exceptional, but SP was equally as exceptional. P.S. I tend to ramble sometimes.
