This is my first post on this webiste/forum, so please bare with me!
So I've been desperately trying to change the signal bars on the right during a multiplayer game from 4 to 10. I know all the steps to doing so, but I can't find the "config_mp.cfg" file in "C:\Program Files\Steam\Steamapps\common\call of duty modern warfare 2\players". All I see is a couple of files named "settings_c.zip" and "settings_s.zip" and a folder named "save" with a bunch of .svg files in it. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate. I went into my Control Panel and in Folder Options, I ticked off where it says "show hidden files", but I still can't find the file. Note: I've attached a snapshot of the screen to proove that all I see are the 2 .zip files and the save folder, and no config_mp.cfg file. Please help! - Dave |

Don't know what to tell you dude. I can navigate through those folders just fine. My guess is it's something Windows 7 is doing; perhaps some 7 users can pop in and help. Have you tried opening the zip folders? Maybe 7 is zipping those files automatically.

Set your folder browser to display hidden files.

Same as others' comments - I agree that mp_config.cfg it not obviously infront of you. However finding your config is usually such a no-brainer and simple thing to do not many have ever had a problem
(P.S. 2 hours is hardly a great length of time to wait for a reply on most decent forums) Nevertheless...Idea 1 Quote:
Idea 2 In an extremely shortened phrase: "vista/7 puts stuff in either program files or appdata and sometimes has practical issues switching between them" so, try this fix for vista on the off chance it also applies to Win 7. The image you are interested in is the second one. the "compatability files" tab only appears on SOME windows though, so you MUST start at c:\program files\Steam\steamapps and then navigate through to the players folder, looking out for the "compatability files" button on each folder. FIXED - no PLAYER/PROFILE folder in VISTA - Call of Duty Forums Idea 3 Search boxes, oh how wonderful they are.
Note, yes I did write this post whilst using vista, but a HUGE amount of stuff is either identical or extremely similar (thus can be found easily) Good luck! ![]()

You could always seaech for all files types and type in the name of the file config_mp that should do it. Make sure you search on the hdd you installed the game to. If it brings up more than 1 file just check its location which should help you find the right one

I do not understand why this would not work. Advanced search, ticking the box r.e. non indexed locations, searches the entire drive. In that case, "back to basics" as it were:
1) I assume you have actually played MW2 on this PC and have set up an steam account and played the game on this PC at least once? 2) I assume you only have one hard drive, labled C:\ Sorry for my rusty-ness where I keep calling it mp_config not config_mp. Make sure you are searching for config_mp. What with there being no console I've lost most of knowledge of modding and command lines in the COD games through lack of using it.

I now see those files and a load of others along with my config files:
![]() Not quite sure why this has deleted your config files. Am I right in saying you still play MW2 perfectly without any problems?

Thanks a lot for responding.
ABC & oneinchwunda, - the game is not a cracked version, it's bought from a store - installation went fine - I haven't played the game on any other PC except this one - yes, the game is on my C:\ drive A note you might want to take into consideration is that I restored my system due to a network connectivity issue and re-installed the game (then again, everything went fine - multiplayer data/rank was saved due to syncing to the Steam Cloud but Spec Ops and Campaign data/progress was erased). I play the game on a regular basis (around 2 hours a day) and everything works fine. Now I'm 100% sure the file exists somewhere on my drive because, after all, it's a .cfg file and I would have problems with the game if it wasn't there... and anyways I see the 4 signal bars on the scoreboard of every game so that indicates that it has a source (config_mp). Pretty weird, huh.

It hasn't deleted them, they're somewhere in there because like I said in my previous reply, all aspects of the multiplayer are functioning correctly and I haven't come across any issues whatsoever. And plus, I see the 4 signal bars on the right side of the scoreboard for every game; that's an indicator that it has a source (config_mp) but I can't frikken find it!
Thanks for you post though. |

Quite interesting, you mentioned that you think it's finding a config because you have 4 bars. Until you create a profile manually (oh - that's another idea...) then then no players etc folder or file structure even exists. Likewise if you don't setup a config or change anything that's not allowed (e.g. cg_drawFPS in MP - btw lol, cg_drawfps works in SP. I tried +action stuff to try and get lean to work but it didn't - anyway that's another story) then COD deletes your config (NOT your rank etc) and gives you a fresh one next time you start the game, so some questiosn based on that:
Also, it's a long shot (and I have no idea if this directory exists on win 7) but try looking here... c:\users\yourusername\saved games If it's there I shall be extremely suprised, since I don't remember being given any choice or control whatsoever regarding virtually anything during installation or setup.

I greatly appreciate your help, ABC. But no solution was found. Everything you said works fine and I don't get any error messages while running the game. As for now, I'll have to settle with 4 bars and not knowing who the host is
![]() If there is any alternative way of knowing who the host is, please let me know. Thanks for spending time to resolve my issue. |

Wait a sec, you don't have a 64bit OS? Coz then it'd be in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\call of duty modern warfare 2...

Nope, my Win7 Ultimate is a 32 bit.
"Previous versions" tab (by right-clicking on the "players" folder) doesn't exist cause I haven't had a crash or lost those files before. Method 2 doesn't work either, cause as I said before, in the "players" folder there's only a folder named "save" and 2 files named "settings_c.zip" and "settings_s.zip" which I have tried opening in notepad but it displays no coding, just a line of weird characters. There are no backup or original files, and no, they're not hidden either.

Have you tried to unzip/extract the zip files? Right click > Extract All
Then look for a config_mp.cfg to open in notepad? COD's .cfg files btw can definitely be opened in notepad but zipped folders on the other hand, as you've discovered, certainly can not...
