Default Running in Place

4 out of every 5 games I get this.

I run around, occasionally getting pushed around by lag (it once even pushed me off the edge of highrise!) and just about every close encounter I have with an enemy, they jog in place, I empty my clip into them, and then I go straight to my kill-cam. Kill-cam shows me running and then freezing in place as they stare at me, pull out their pistol, crouch up and down in front of me and then kill me.

Is it me? Is there anything at all I can do to get rid of this curse?

Thanks in advance for your (hopefully) valuable replies.

Better connections, better router, wired not wireless will all help, but essentially no, you cannot get rid of this.

That's the problem. Short of moving house, there is nothing you can do.

It's a problem with your internet connection, but that issue is made worse by the way MW2 works (unless you play on console, well then it's always been like this)

You can try to asses the issue by taking a speedtest.net and pingtest.net test and posting the results. Gaming is ALL ABOUT the things that the "pingtest" site measures. Once you have, say, a 1Mb/s connection speed doesn't make the slightest of differences.

Thanks for trying, but that is not what Pingtest.net - The Global Broadband Quality Test tells you, I do not know where on earth (or rather pingtest.net) you measured your actual connection speed. Please go to Pingtest.net - The Global Broadband Quality Test and take the test before posting a link to an image of your results, just like you did with speedtest. Here is an example:

"packet loss" or "jitter" is what causes most lag spikes, it's when data is sent (i.e. you tell your character to run forward and fire) but for some reason doesn't get to the server on time (which is why you move and fire on your screen, but on killcam - i.e. what is ACTUALLY happening as far as the game is concerned - you're a sitting duck)

Are you using wireless or do you have an (ethernet) wire between your router/modem and console/PC?

.com redirected to Bandwidth Place | Internet Speed Test

Wireless adapter, going through 2 walls and a linen closet.

Last night I made myself a cantenna, and the few matches I played have been playable.

Anyway, thanks for doing that. Packet loss is the main issue with wireless and luckily in the 20 or so seconds the test takes, you had none.

A 4ms jitter on a 16ms ping is 25%, and to be honest I think you would notice +- 25% when it changes... that would certainly account for your player momentairly pausing or "teleporting" forward 6 feet.

Tin foil is an interesting idea. Interesting but you probably don't care about info: Since tin foil stumps alpha radiation, you'd assume it's more than stump the lower pentrating, lower energy radio wave (wifi is 2.4GHz, near enough radio waves) and since it reflect lights you'd also assume it'd reflect, not absorb, radio waves (although different wavelengths are reflected/absorbed/transmitted by different materials... hmm) thus help increase your wireless signal if you aim the foil "dish" at the door since you are "bouncing" the wifi signal to your reciever, not just pushing your internet magically through solid concrete. Although, since mobile phone signals go through walls and are of a higher frequency than wifi, then all of the above is void. damn.

Yeah this happens to me about 10 times a day, it's really annoying. I always thought it was down to Packet Loss but my Pingtest.net result has always been good, i'm at a loss.

The packet loss from the test is considerably unreliable considering we'd be dealing with hosts far from ourselves, especially europe (for those in the US)

My adapter is in a Dole Pineapple tin can on top of the armoire that contains my rig, with an extension cord to the top of it. It's a laser of sorts, focusing the signal towards the router. I savored every bite of pineapple.

Naw, radio waves are not less penetrating than alpha radiation. A sheet of paper is all that is needed to stop alpha particles since they have a relatively large mass. A radio wave has a mass that is effectively zero so it has a much less chance to interacts with a medium. Just wanted to throw that out there. I'm bored.
