Default Seeking NAT help (PC)

The following is a copy/paste of what I put on the IW forums, but everyone over there is too busy bitching about the game to help people. I tried to use the search function to find someone with my exact issue, and while some are similar my router page has me at a bit of a loss.

----------

Hello all. I have tried briefly to set up my network so that my NAT would display as Open, but I failed. I was trying to set up a static IP for my computer, but I think I need to get the correct DNS servers from my cable company as the ones I put in did not work.

That aside, I was logged into my router and noticed things looked a tad different than what I saw in similar screenshots for others. I was hoping to gather info from people who know more about this stuff than I do.

Does EVERY field need to be filled in for this to work? If so, I am puzzled as to where I get some of the values to enter in then. The dropdown box allows me to swap between TCP, UDP and TCP+UDP.

Or am I just going about this the wrong way? I have heard some people just add their computer to a "DMZ", which sounds dangerous to me but what is the real risk there? I also heard something about UPnP settings (mine is currently disabled).

Umm.. poking around a bit more on my router's interface I also see under WAN configuration that I apparently have a DHCP connection setup with both NAT and Firewall checkmarked. Not sure if that is relevant one way or the other.

If there are any other tips you can give me on this matter I would greatly appreciate it. Due to my NAT settings I can't even directly connect to my IRL friend's party, nor can he to mine. His is set to Open, but my Strict setting is messing things up it seems.

My biggest issue with tinkering blindly is that I am not the only person using this network. Our router is used for both my computer and my wife's computer. Question regarding that actually, will me tinkering with network settings make it so that I have to change HER settings as well? (She doesn't have MW2 on her computer btw, I just don't want to lock her out of the internet)

My router is a Motorola vt2442-vd

------------------------------

I thought I had fixed the problem by simply changing my UPnP setting from disabled to enabled, as my NAT type switched to Open after that. However, I got a steam error of some sort the other day where I had to restart Steam completely and then when I got back into MW2 it said Strict again. UPnP is still enabled, so IDK wtf to do. Halp!

You'll need to put your X360's IP address into the DMZ. It should make your Nat Type open. If you need further help, let us know and I'll try to help you out...

You know what is really weird though about the NAT type...mine was on strict even though all the router stuff was set up the right way. Just the other day, I hop on and now it's open. I didn't do anything different, I think that maybe Windows updated or something but that doesn't affect my router. It doesn't seem to make a damn bit of difference in my ability to find a game though, so I don't see what the big issue is about NAT type.

Thanks for saving me the trouble of posting in this thread BuugGhost. Oh wait...

Well now that I'm here Beaster, obviously ignore the part about putting your X360 in the DMZ, because your playing on the PC. And whatever you do...

DON'T PUT YOUR PC INTO THE DMZ!!

From what I understand, doing that will put your PC in front of your firewall, so it won't be protected.

Select your router from the list on Port Forward, select MW2 from the list of games, then follow the instructions to open the necessary ports needed to open your NAT. I hope this helps you out. Good luck...

Ah right. My bad :P. just go to portforward, search up your router and follow the instructions.

You have nothing to feel bad about BuuGhost. You provided Beaster with the link to the appropriate info, so the credit goes to you mate. I just wanted to make sure he didn't make a catastrophic mistake by putting his PC into the DMZ, then blaming me for it.

Oh, and I'm not saying you're the type of person to blame other for your problems Beaster, I'm just trying to cover my own arse...

The odd thing about the selecting games for port forwarding, is that my router only shows VERY outdated games. *scratches head*

My final question before I go to set this all up is will me messing with static IPs, port forwarding, etc, in any way obstruct my wife from connecting to the internet (same network)?
