Default Could not load localization.txt

Hi all

This weekend is a free weekend for MW2 multiplayer so I downloaded the game off steam because it allows you to for another 2 days.

Whenever I try to load the game an error message pops up saying "Could not load localization.txt. Please Make sure Modern Warfare 2 is running from the correct folder".

I have looked online about this issue, and it's primarily to do with language / text settings. I don't understand how this could be affecting me because my steam is set to English and the downloaded game (so it says) is english?

I have tried a game cache check but it seems to be fine every time.

How can I fix this? Any suggestions?

Thanks

Well I was going to suggest a game cache check, until you said you had already done it (try again anyways, you never know).

I looked on the Steam forums and found this, although it is for the full game. Worth a try though (obviously miss out that bits that don't apply).

Quote:
1 ) Install your English-version of the game from your DVD's/torrent.
2 ) Cut/Copy the folder named 'Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2'
3) Log into your new Steam account, make sure your steam is in ENGLISH, and apply your MW2 CD-Key. 2 New icons will appear in your Game-list: Mw2 Single Player and Mw2 Multiplayer. Let it load for about 5 seconds.
4 ) Right-click on Mw2 Single Player and Mw2 Multiplayer and choose "Pause updating", ON BOTH !
5 ) Logout of Steam and open your; \Steam\SteamApps\common\, here you should see a newly created folder named 'call of duty modern warfare 2'
6 ) Remember Point 2? We Cut/Copied the folder we installed earlier, now replace the new one with the old one.
7 ) Start Steam, Right-click on Mw2 Multiplayer and choose 'Resume updating'.
8 ) Once it's done Updating, right-click on Mw2 Multiplayer and choose 'Properties' and then Local files and then the final button: "Verify integrity of game cache". (This will make sure that you have the LATEST files of thegame, if not Steam will automaticly update it for you !!)
9 ) At this point you should have a fully working Mw2 Multiplayer, if you get start-up problems at this stage; the only thing you should do is re-log into steam and that should be it.
Had another search and can't find anything better. Hope this helps.

The file should be located in "C:\Program Files [x86]\Steam\steamapps\common\call of duty modern warfare 2".

You could try putting this text file (taken from my installation) into said folder.

I tried all I could, but because it was already on the Steam list I couldn't do any of the Stop Updating stuff. All I could do was remove the folder, double click on the MW2 in Steam already there, and then it created a new folder. I copied my MW2 data back, did a verify, it did a small update, and it still comes up with the same issue. :/

I'll probably just delete it all and try again from scratch later by redownloading it completely.

Thanks for the help anyways.

No problem.

A re-install is probably what I would have suggested next anyway.

Okays, that localization.txt file managed to load the game!

But now I have another problem!

After the loading screen appears an error zone "code_pre_gfx_mp.ff" could not be found.

It just seems my installation is buggared. I'll redownload it later and see what happens.

Yeah does the same thing.

I just heard that you may need to download the single player part of the game too because it contains files that will make the multiplayer work. But that would make no sense as to why Steam would put just the Multiplayer version up and it's broken?

I'll redownload it later and see if it fixes itself.

It worked for me!!!
Here is what I did:
1) I have saved a content of a properly installed english version of MW2
2) Replaced all the content in the Steam MW2 folder with the files from stage 1
3) Placed the localization file that was uploaded here by Schosch in it's place
4) ran "integrity check of the MW2 from within Steam
5) Enjoyed playing the game.

Hope it helps.

Buy a new computer

Make sure you do a COMPLETE re-install first. After uninstalling, delete EVERYTHING from MW2 in your Steam folder. You can delete your local game stats aswell, but that will lose your rank etc.

Then re-install from disc, and let it update via Steam. Then you can verify the game cache.

If that still does not work, post a thread on the IW forums and someone with more knowledge is likely to offer better help.

I suspect the free trial has ended by now xD ^^^^^^^^

If you downloaded it legit then you'll be able to uninstall & reinstall. If you bought it legit, likewise you'll be able to do everything mentioned here successfully. Finally if you obtained the game illegally well then unfortunately you won't find any help on this forum.
