Default Connection Timeout/DC'd from steam

I got my ISP changed to AT&T today, new router and everything.

Internet works fine, messengers/youtube/typical internet browser stuff, no problems at all.

When I play MW2 I'll get into a game, play fine for a few minutes, then everything will freeze, immobile, slightest mouse movement moves the screen extremely fast, for about 20-30 seconds and then up pops the "Server connection timed out".

When that happens, I can try to look for another game to no avail, with the "Disconnected from Steam" message popping up shortly after.

After much googling and troubleshooting I've also noticed the internet pretty much dies during this period, though my connection to the router doesn't change.

I really don't know what to do anymore. It's nearly 6 in the morning and I'm still shafted by this.

Thanks for whatever help you can provide.

I don't play MW2 on PC, but what you're describing sounds like Lag. This is similar to what happens to me on PS3.
If it happens everytime though, It is probably something else.
Do you have all the ports on your router open. The reason being that when I have ports open on pc for other things *cough fileshare*, I can experience similar issues with browsing (though is generally aids gaming).

Lag? mmm nah, well maybe kind of.

LOL, that made sense. Lag implies that you are still connected, albeit terribly, to the server. Internet can actually be pretty s*** and no doubt most connections drop out several times a day but you simply don't notice on the internet or downloading until you do something intensive (i.e. gaming)

This sounds periodic though. Does it happen in other similar (where "similar" means other COD games or stuff that uses the same engine, e.g. the "IDtech3" aka Quake III engine e.g. 007 Quantum of Solace) COD games?

What does pingtest.net say about line quality?

This is getting repetitive.

Thanks for the replies.

Skuh: If by that you mean have other programs using the internet/downloading/whatever, no. Nothing but steam/MW2 on at 12+ in the morning.

Pingtest.net:

If it seriously is lag, it's some sort of genetically modified, roid rage lag, crushing my face with its pinkie toe and destroying my online gaming experience with its spittle

At regular intervals before the superlag, I experience regular lag, 1-2 second freezes every now and again, but I've come to accept that as part of nature... this is different. I'm not sure what to make of it or how to really treat it.

I had a similar problem to being disconnected mid game not to long ago. I came to relise that a previous steam client patch had cause this to happen, so I basically opt into the beta and started using that and I haven't had a problem since. No idea why the steam client was doing it but in my situation it was disconnecting me from steam all together once I had been kicked from the game.
