I recently upgraded my FIOS connection because I was always at 3 bars instead of 5. I have upgrades to a 35 / 35 FIOS connection and have not seen any change is this something to do with the MW2 Server because I should be flying. I have all the ports necessary for Xbox Live opened but not seeing any performance increase.

I think part of it is MW2 servers. I just recently upgraded from dsl to cable still have occasions where I have 1 to 4 bars instead of five. If the host has a bad connection or if they are across the ocean from you I've noticed it makes a huge difference. When I had dsl if I was in a game that was rather local we all would have 5 bars with no lag.

Having a good connection is absolutely useless if the host doesn't. Therefore it is very possible that a good connection can "go to waste" - similar in concept to how my computer's potential is completely going to waste because they designed MW2 for consoles and so can't take advantage of my PC's superior hardware.

HOWEVER gaming is NOT about pure speed. A good gaming connection is all about other factors like ping (the most important & what those stupid green bars indicate) jitter & packet loss. None of this is (apart from ping, as mentioned) measured by your upload or download or the utterly stupid "bars" measurement that was invented for gaming console users because apparantly 174 is too hard to understand but 3 green squares makes perfect sense.

So, it is entirely possible that your internet simply isn't very good for gaming! HOWEVER the peer-2-peer system concept that many console games rely on also has flaws which probably contribute to a bad "experience" as much as a bad internet connection would.

Go to Pingtest.net - The Global Broadband Quality Test and take a test that is local to you. Note down your ping (this measures lag) jitter (this measures how "up & down" the lag is) and importantly packet loss (this accounts for those random moments of sudden lag during a game)

Now take a test that is a substantial distance away and note the same figures.

Hey thanks for the info I will check out that ping site. I guess I am wasting money on this connection I may drop back down to where I was. Sorry about the pic. it didnt want to post but oh well. Thanks again.

Was that using a server that is near or far away from you? The answer is important because the quality and speed of your internet typically gets lower the further away from your city that you go.
