This stupid connections is seriously pissing me off. On some days, it's good, and on others it's freaking red and I lag like hell. I've tried everything like putting my router closer to the top or closer to the ps3. Can someone please help me?
It's retarded since I knife a lot and I freaking knifed people like four times and they just turn around and shotgun me when they should have died already >.> |

* Is your internet good or crap for gaming. Run a test at Pingtest.net - The Global Broadband Quality Test because it tests all the vital stuff for gaming (speed doesn't actually matter much unless you're host)
* unfortunately there really isn't a lot you can do unless you play on PC. * unfortunately even if you do play on PC there are only one or two things you can try. * MW2, and many other console games, use a system I like to abbreviate to Pptbs-2-P (peer pretending to be a server - to - peer) One of the disadvantages of this system is that every time you play you get a different speed of connection to the host. This means that by default some lobbies will have a good connection with minimal lag whilst you can join the next lobby and have an awful connection * If other people are using the internet (laptops, other computers, other game consoles, downloading, streaming TV etc) whilst you game this can seriously reduce your performance (afterall, you're sharing your internet connection between two or more devices) * The performance of your internet can be much slower at "peak times" depending on your ISP, geographical location and the quality of the local telephone wiring. Bear this in mind before making a comparison between days/times/gaming sessions. That is all I can think of raising for now. Not much help (apart from running the pingtest, making sure no-one else is on the internet) I know.

Kind of on topic. My xbox is wired to the router. Would laptops (wireless connection) slow down the connection of my xbox? Even if they are just on, but not browsing?
Sometimes I'll be playing, and it will get supper laggy all the sudden. I lag out, and get a message like 'disconnected from server'. Immediately after, I reconnect to the game, join the same team etc.. but lose all my kills. What the fuck is going on? If this happens while I'm the host, it kicks me from the game altogether.

There is your answer. What sort of numbers did you get? A ping of 100ms or under is 4 bars, 100 - 200 is 3 bars, 200 - 300 is 3 bars etc. Jitter is important too however, this number accounts for how "up and down" your ping (aka connection bar thing) is. Packet loss accounts for "teleporting." Those small lag spikes where one moment you're in one place, the next you've moved 10ft. Quote:

Where was I, ah yes, reliability. Your internet is pretty crap and probably has lots of very minor disconnections every few seconds/minutes. During normal internet use this happens so quickly you don't notice, but during online gaming where you're constantly communicating online those little imperfections show up as lag spikes. The bigger imperfections which still might not be noticed whilst browsing the internet can disconnect you from a game. Also, bear in mind because it's a Pptbs-2-P (my corrected abbreviation of P-2-P which was made to keep vis happy, but anyway) you're also relying on the host's internet, which just like yours has lots of minor disconnections. Said "minor disconnections" are really quite minor if you're wired, but on wireless... well...

So basically, what is a solution to this problem? Seems it's only me that has a problem lol cuz I see everyone else in the game and they have 4 bars. |

It's weird because living away at college I had good internet speed, and I would always be host. Sometimes it would just go out for a couple of minutes though. Back home, it's still pretty fast, but always has those retarded disconnects. I thought maybe it had something to do with the router, since the one I use during school is newer and better.
The most frustrating part is that I can't be host for more than an hour without dropping. Or when I'm on a killstreak. So gay. Edit: They were different providers.

exactly, different providers, different plans, different locations, different distances from the telephone exchange.
Basically, fast reliable fibre optic cable is used for massive distances across the world, but then from the telephone exchange to your house (in the UK in particular) is crappy old copper wire that hasn't been changed since 1903 when it was first installed. The further you live from the exchange the more you rely on said crappy 20th century copper wire, thus the slower your internet and the more patchy it is. What you really want is a business class internet account. They'll come to your premisis and gi up your driveway and everything inbetween, and you get your very own fibre optic cable, that no one else shares, going straight from your wallsockets to the telephone exchange and onto the national/international telephone line network. That is how dedicated servers manage to have 100MB/s connections with tiny ping and extremely few disconnections. Next time you're at work, do a Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test it may suprise you. If you work for a company that designs technical stuff (as opposed to a school or shop) and you work on an $8000 work station then it's highly likely your works internet wtfpwns. Take a console to work. Again, depending on your job, the IT department may go mental and lock the firewall down when it detects an unknown device try to connect to the network... but still. Oh, there's a point. College. Bear in mind you're sharing your internet between however many people are in your building.

Well college was just my house, so I was sharing that with my roommates. That was Time Warner, which with 'power boost', was pretty fast. Now back home I have Cox, which is slower. I just tested it at work, 2.8 Mb/s with a ping of 75. I don't think this is business class, so that's probably what I get at home too.
So you're telling me there's nothing I can do about my random disconnects?

Precisely, there is virtually nothing that you can do for free to avoid disconnects. Changing ISP may alter speed but probably not disconnects.
Try openning your NAT? Maybe you'll get connected to better quality games? visit infinityward.com/nat for more info. Don't think putting your PS3 in a DMZ will achieve anything regarding performance. It may find you more games etc.

You've failed. For it to be a peer pretending to be a server, it would have to be a peer in the first place. It's not. It's a host and you are a client.

It is a peer though. It's a peer right up until it pretends to be a server and acts as a host. In any other lobby it could be a peer. Being a peer & a host are interchangeable for a console/PC on MW2.

Re the DMZ comment. I finally found out how to get my PS3 into the DMZ and have yes found mat he's much more easily, but I feel sure I am connecting quicker to the matchmaking server and haven't crashed out connection-wise yet. Worth a try if only to keep your NAT Open.
Second suggestion, again apologies as I am not a tech expert but I was having major problems for a while and started switching the router off and on before connecting, oh and switch any wifi mobile phone connections off (if you can bear to) too as it keeps the traffic level down in your router. Like I said simple and it might not work, but it's easy stuff to try. Good luck |

I had a siemens 4200 modem and a belkin F5D8236au4 N wireless router.
Finally got sick of Nat3 cause of the router in the bloody modem even with the DMZ on in the belkin router. Bought a belkin F5D5730au ADSL2+ modem, got Nat2 straight away. Kept getting F for my ping test. Turned of firewall in modem, now my pingtest is always A, ping never more than 40ms, jitter never more than 3ms. I've never had drop out issues , just mega lag issues constantly, seems much better now tho. BLOODY SIEMENS 4200 SPEEDSTREAM are terrible!!!!!!!!! |
