Default Directx error message

I was able to successfully do a system restore and I have reinstalled Steam and downloaded MW2 again, but every time I try to load it I get an error message saying "DirectX encountered an unrecoverable error." I made sure my Directx drivers are up to date but I still get the same error message. Has anyone else encountered this problem or have a solution

Thanks in advance

Hmm, curious. This was a very VERY common problem on COD4 & COD WaW with motherboards with built in soundcards designed by a company called realtek. There are only a handful of modern motherboards that do not have realtek onboard sound. IIRC I think I've heard of the COD4/WaW solutions working on MW2, it'll be on this forum somewhere but i suspect it'd be very difficult to find it. The usual COD4/WaW solutions:

* Plug a mic into the front/rear audio out jack.
* Disable the front audio out jack
* Set sound quality to at/below 24bits @ 44KHz (very easy to do on vista/win 7, very awkward to do on XP)
* Install "windows audio 6.0 drivers" instead of the realtek/sigmatel drivers

Can you give us some more info. System specs, when this happened, why you did a system restore, did MW2 ever work, do you own previous COD games etc etc. Until we know some more info we're all just chucking out a hundred generic solutions.

If it worked PRE-SYSTEM RESTORE (I can't really tell given how you worded your post) then it's a very good bet that it's a driver issue as these are one of the two main things a system restore rolls back. Visit amd.com or nvidia.com and download the latest drivers. They both have "quickfind" menus etc to make sure you get the right driver, it's pretty self explanatory.

COD owner - COD expansion pack owner - COD2 owner - COD2: BRO player - COD3 owner - COD4 owner - COD:WaW owner - COD: MW2 owner - COD: BO owner

This is getting repetitive.

Success! I went to NVIDIA's website and I was able to install the correct drivers for my card (an NVIDIA GeForce GT 220) and MW2 works just as smoothly as it did pre-restore (along with my other games that were having the same problem). Thanks for the advice.
