I was playing earlier today, nothing out of the ordinary happened. Not even put into a hacked lobby. Later, now, I try to join again. I load MW2 multiplayer, and the cursor is frozen. Can't move, can't load the in-game steam thing. So I ctrl-alt-dlt'd and ended it. Right as I do this, an IW Console pops up, with a bunch of random lines of code and at the bottom says "Cheat Detected". I keep trying to load multiplayer, same thing - its just the menu screen with no ability to move the cursor or do anything. Keeps saying cheat detected, etc.

Contrats IW, you got me. Oh wait, I've never cheated in my life.

Sounds like a hacked server has messed up your config. It can take awhile for it to cause problems (I speak from experience).

To fix it; locate your Steam directory (under Program Files by default). Go to SteamApps -> Common -> Call of duty modern warfare 2 -> Players

Delete config_mp.cfg. Once the file is re-written make the file "read only" to prevent it from happening again.

Hopefully this fixes it.

I deleted the config, and no dice. I'll keep looking.

Above and below this section is a ton of lines beginning with "Ignoring asset" yada yada.

And I also tried deleting the Players folder, which was a possible solution to rank hack fixes, but this still didn't work.

AFAIK, a typical VAC ban doesn't block you until you try to join a server (i.e. you can still open the game).


Have you checked your VAC status? I have heard of temp bans occurring despite what most people say.

You don't see it here, but there is also a small box that comes up that just says cheat detected as well.

THis is what I get. It doesn't even allow me to try and join a game, as I can't move the mouse. I don't know if thats part of the ban - that seems a little over controlling.

How do I check my VAC status?

/shrug. Idk, MW2 and I were on the outs many times, so this might be good for me. Too bad this was the only new game that my computer will ever run. I must debate - COD4, Double Agent, Runescape....?

I basically said that I knew that VAC bans were never lifted, but asked if that was only for people that actually cheat. I talked about the hacked lobbies that I was put into, and then attached an image of the message I got.

Anyone know how long it usually takes? Or if they'll simply not reply because they think I'm a cheater...

I'm sorry for you, man.

You lost 60 dollars worth...all because some hacker in a MW2 lobby hacked your account. Not directly, but indirectly (lobby hack - the infamous 10th prestige lobby). Steam isn't sympathetic and easily can be sued in a class action suit.

And BTW, this is exactly why I don't play online games on PC.

Sucks man, I guess you just found out how fail VAC truly is. I have a friend, aimbots all day, no ban. Yet you get hammered?

You should come play some CoD4 with me man. It's more fun than Mw2, and you won't get banned as long as you are legit(no accidental hacked lobby joining).

I've played Cod4 a couple times since this happened. Its been tricky getting back in the swing of things. I did terrible for a few matches, got a 10 kill streak in one game, etc back and forth. If all goes well I'll be as good as I was before - one day, way back when, I left a match and checked my stats and had *exactly* a 2.0 KDR. I took a picture of it... its kinda cool.
