Default COD4 Appreciation thread

For anyone who really really really really really likes COD4, but mostly for those who think it's better than MW2. As with COD2, I believe 4 is one of (if not, the) best COD game because although WaW has better graphics, MW2 is more "fun" for average joe because it's 100x easier... COD4 had some simply epic moments...

* With the recent increase in western-military activity to yet again get to be part of the US marine core and SAS was a revalation. Sure the WW2 games are nice and gritty, but playing as the USMC backed by 5th gen fighter planes, attack helicopters and other modern weaponary was un-paralleled.

* Older gamers will complain it was still too short, but COD4's story was out standing. It took the winning "like you're in a movie" COD formula and added characters and emotion.

* On PC, the online mode was sensational. For many it struck the perfect balance between "fun for everyone" and providing a semi-decent challenge.

i agree, cod4 hit us where we werent expecting and it proved to be the best fps i have ever played. It never got boring as i was still playing it 2/3hrs a night after 2 years, i also made 2 great friends who i always play with and have known for 3 years now online.

Cod4 - epic storyline and unnatural re-play ablity

W@W - ok storyline, average re-play abilty, better graphics, nazi zombie game modes

MW2 - epic storyline, average re-play abilty, better graphics, spec ops

Was MW2's story as epic as COD4? Sure the US bit was cool but apart from that IMO it was no way near COD4's.

In COD4 you have an intense middle eastern coup followed by a US military campaign which provides brilliant FPS'ing but not much character building. Running alongside however you have the SAS missions where you really get to know the characters as it's just you, them and a sticky situation. The user-interactive-cut-scene where we say goodbye to Gaz & Griggs but are left on a clifftop regarding price was amazing.

In contrast in MW2 you go around with guys with ridiculous names like "Meat" and "Ghost" and other people that die so quickly you never get to know them. The games' finale consists of a cringingly cheesy pull-knife-out-of-chest-and-throw-it-at-shepard.

Infact the mission list is just epic on COD4. The story line of some of the missions:

Even the first level - SAS rapel onto an enemy-held cargoship in the dead of night and silently retake it.
Warpig - You (US special forces) battle through the alleyways of a burning city with some amazing lighting effects in night vision with lasers.
Chenobyle - crawl silently through wastelands evading overwhelming enemy patrols before an amazing escape & evade mission.
MK. 19 on SeaKnight - You practically watch a full scale invasion by USMC special forces and if you feel like it you can blow main battle tanks (The T62s) and a few BMPs up. Before a rather cinematic and involving race against time, ultimately failing when you crash land.

In constrast I feel MW2 had some good bits (Being on a littlebird, flying shotgun with two F-15 eagles...) but mostly intervened by nothing more than "average" missions.

I think both COD4 AND MW2 have great story lines, I wouldn't advice playing the MW2 story mode before playing Cod4's story mode. I think it would just be pointless. Cod4's story mode was excellent, but I have to say I liked MW2's story mode play as it was easier on Veteran than it is in Cod4, I still haven't completed COD4's veteran. I wish their was no respawn like MW2 in the story mode.

what? Surely you can't base "how good a game is" on whether or not you can do it properly? Games (especially on the highest difficulty setting!) are susposed to be difficult.

COD4 is one of, if not the, best FPS ever made for consoles. PC not so sure, I'm not really an expert but I'm guessing it rates pretty highly.

Is it still worth getting COD4 on PC now? Im guessing so after the failure of MW2, but just wanted an opinion.

You can probably find it for £20. If MW2 is still interesting I'd say don't buy it yet - it'll just stay in the cupboard for ages.

On the other hand though, the longer you leave it, the less people will remain playing COD4. Well, you'd be forgiven for thinking that... COD2 is still going pretty strong last time I looked. Dunno.

With COD4 online you basically find a few servers you like and stick with em. For me, I prefer it hectic so stick to 15 v 15 ish games. If you've recently played on a console this will probably seem stupidly over-crowded.

Well tbh, seeing as I did pay £30 for it, I might as well get some more use out of it. The reason I ask is that I saw for ~£17 (can't remember where) and I was thinking, why not?

Funny you should say that. Recently all I've been playing is GW because 6v6 just seems too boring, especially on MW2. 15v15 does sound a bit mad, but if I get even more bored of MW2 soon, then I'll go out and give it a try.

Love cod4 still play every day on pc and 360. Sad though, was on 360 today, only 3k users online. it will soon be dead. Although I don't doubt it will always be popular on pc.

I went back to playing CoD4 recently, once you get used to it no other online FPS can really pull you towards it quite like CoD4, it pretty much ruined my joy for other games, I'll always compare CoD4 to whatever new game I get and still CoD4 would come on top, also I never realised 'till now how much I hated Juggernauts LOL.

Another great thing is that It doesn't seem to get old on PC, whatever server I join I'll see new ppl starting out in lower ranks, the amount of servers never seem to lower. It's like Counter-Strike on crack.

I have to admit I was suprised to find there are still 11,000 servers... nicely all the most popular ones are still there!

As HBK said, I was suprised to find a lot more lower ranked players. Now that's either older players getting bored and starting new accounts or more new people - which is great for the game!

It seems there are a lot of new people coming to COD4.

I saw it for sale a few months back, new at a reduced price. Went to go and buy it the following week but they were all sold out, so I bought a used copy for $40 AUD. Back at the same store last week they have a whole pile of new copies for $50 on display - same shelf as the latest titles.

Finally got COD4 last night. Been playing it then and today and I all I have to say is wow!

Anybody who wants a game can add me on Steam or Xfire.

The online mode is pretty awesome. And up against MW2 it is brilliant. I can pick a server with the game type I want, no hackers and best of all, I can a server with a low ping so there is no lag!

If you've ever played WaW or COD1, UO or 2 for that matter... apart from mods, maps, better connection, more choice, more control, more mature players, better quality servers etc etc etc

You'll learn to adore the "lean" function...

COD4 really surprised me after COD3 I thought no other game in the series would surpass COD2. I was wrong. The only thing that stopped me from playing that game was having the disk break in half during a party.

IMO the only thing that I hated about the campaign was the SAS stealth missions

After playing MW2, I'm certainly finding it hard to remember to use lean. Don't get me wrong though, it is a great feature, just a little hard to get used to having it.

I guess ever since the the first time I played COD, leaning out of cover etc was just part of not dying, so it's etched into my playstyle. Whereas you on the other hand (did you play COD1, UO or 2 lots at the time of release?) having MW2 as your first COD in agggeeeeesssss don't use it because you never used to. Also, since you play on console, you're used to not even having the option.

I've never used the lean feature in CoD4, cause I only remember to use after my head has been blown off. ^_^

The only time I lean is involuntarily, I'm going to knife someone and lean right instead -_-; thank you MW2 lol

I lean, whenever I look round a corner, and lift my head slightly to see over something. It helps!!

Yes, while looking at the TV, move the top half of your body to the left or right while staying in the same footprint.
This is LEANING.
It helps when you want to look around 2d images on your TV.
