i know im still new to this site but i been thinking about this for a while..
when Micro. or PSN ban's someone how come they arent able to ban a IP address from using the online services instead of jus banning or deleting the profile?? to me banning someones IP address seems more affective in keeping hackers out. what do you think??

It wouldn't be fair to anyone else sharing the same console.

Not everyone keeps the same public IP address. ISP's are allocated a limited pool of public addresses by ICANN. Quite often, ISP's will have more customers than they have addresses, so they dynamically assign addresses to users each time the user connects or rotate / renew the addresses after a defined amount of time. For example, an ISP with 50,000 customers only needs 10,000 addresses provided no more than 10,000 people are online at any one time - which is a good thing as it reserves the limited address space of IPv4.
In other words, unless you have a static IP number (which these days you will often pay extra for depending on your country), your IP address could change at any point in time. So banning by IP address sucks because if person A was banned this way, and person B was assigned A's address the next day, B would be shit outta luck if he also had the same console / device as A. Plus there's nothing to stop person A from going to a different ISP and getting a totally different address. Of course, there's nothing stopping him / her from setting up a new account either but they will lose all their settings, achievements, game ranks, etc and they will still be easily tracked and bound to the ToS.
