I've heard stories that if you don't have your xbox standing it could overheat and break. It happened to someone I know. But I've already broken 2 games because of the xbox falling over, and a guy at a game store told me it was best to keep it on it's side to prevent that from happening. But I've still heard many stories about the whole xbox breaking from not getting full ventilation. So how should I position my xbox?

Put it flat. I have two friends who got the red ring of death with it standing up, they put it flat and never had the problem since then. Mine is flat and I've had it for over three years with no problems. Just make sure it is on a solid surface so it can vent properly. If it is on a rug or something like that it might overheat, although I've never heard of that happening.
