I've been playing MW2 for a week online. I only find games that have people that are very high level, or in prestige mode.

Is there a way I can filter out these guys? I am learning fast, but I get my ass kicked so much its not fun at times?

you cant. But note that a higher prestige level does not correlate to skill, just amount of time played. So they'll have more "experience" maybe, but after you get to level 70 you pretty much know how the game works... But yeah, watch commentaries for strategies with different weapons and maps

I think it does.

I recently played a few games at a friends house (he is level 30 or so, no prestige) and found I was being paired with much lower leveled people, no matter the game type, but especially in FFA.

So if you desperately want to play against less experienced players, from what I've seen, you'll find the most of them in FFA.

Don't worry, most people get completely owned when they start playing an online FPS, be patient and try to learn while you're getting your ass kicked and soon you'll be using those tactics on other people.

Well you are getting into MW2 very late in the game. Most people have been playing for 1.5+ years and know maps inside out and know the common routes.

HOWEVER for all that doom and gloom about "people have been playing for years and know the maps" along with "FPS are very hard to get into" etc etc...

Modern Warfare 2 was designed to be as easy to play and quick to learn as possible. There are killstreaks and perks that reward those players who can "only" manage 2 or 3 KS, whilst there are also killstreaks to reward those that can regularly get higher killstreaks, such as 5 and above.

To improve at COD you either need to thinking about the game very logically (certain killstreaks offer a much more efficient reward than others, 5-7-11 being a popular one because once you have 5 kills you're almost garunteed another 6+. If you can cope with the downsides, e.g. higher recoil, then high damage weapons like the TAR 21 & UMP 45 >>>>>>>> all other guns, HOWEVER if you find it hard to cope with recoil then low-damage but super-easy-to-aim weapons like the M4 and ACR will serve you much better) or reading guides (so that you don't have to do any thinking yourself...)

Also, as Serval mentioned one IW-quoted benefit of matchmaking is that you are placed with players of equal SKILL and NOT equal rank/prestige (top tip #56 - rank/prestige means NOTHING)

I suggest playing in easier game modes such as Team Tactical or Team Deathmatch. The lower ranked people tend to go there, and try to avoid Ground War/Search and Destroy/Domination. All the higher ranked people/few lower ranked people go there :P
