I was able to read at least part of your post and I am assuming you were asking for broader distribution/display of the chatbox.

The chatbox is (by design) restricted to the AWOL (General/Any Topic forum). Alternatively, you can load the full windowed chatbox from the nav bar link.

There are no plans and virtually no chance of the chatbox making it's way to the index. I could maybe be convinced to add it to some other select threads (BIG MAYBE), but my initial inclination is to confine it to the AWOL forum only.

Now for the inevitable 'WHY???':

I appreciate the value and fun of having a realtime chit chat spot on the forum. That's why we included a chatbox at all. However, from a site standpoint, other than being a hangout spot for a relatively small percentage of the member base, there is very little good about it.

- 1 Discussions in the chat box never become content for the forum. This is fine for general/off topic banter, but not good when questions, answers, issues, etc are all taking place in the confines of the chatbox - which happens with some regularity.

- 2 A chatbox on the index pushes down content. The 'regulars' in the chatbox aren't what a potential new member coming in from a search result or a link are here to see.

- 3 Chatboxes loading site-wide constitute a significant increase in server load and as a result page/forum load times.

We have a chatbox in a good spot to have a chatbox I believe. If you want to chit chat and just generally shoot the shit, by all means do so. The AWOL forum is precisely the spot to do that. The Guides section, the media section, the troubleshooting section? not so much...

Good call on the SB, it worked for C4F and it seems like a good change for this forum.

My only problem will be having to open up the AWOL to chat. Usually I chat and surf the forums at the same time, with the SB being on every page, it was really comfortable.

Yea that's how i feel too. Also if you see that someone is online and you want to ask them something small, you could just post in the shoutbox and because its the top of every page, they would see it and reply. But now they have to be in the lounge/awol section or in the actual chatbox section.

I don't really mind too much though, thats just one of the bad things

Ruin chatting... lol... ok. That's like saying I've ruined choclate chips...

well you guys can still click the chatbox link in the nave bar and bypass everything else if you want. - or - you can continue to chat at c4f - or- you can hit the AWOL section.

Wolfenstein kinda makes my point for me though... if you have a question, I want it in a thread... not a chatbox. That isn't 'healthy' for the forum/site.

Can you make it so the CB is viewable when you're looking at threads in AWOL as well as just the AWOL index?

In a few old forums that I've been active on, the shoutbox has been located at the bottom of the forum and isn't viewable except on the main index. I think this would be a good option to consider.

If your worrying about people skipping over threads to ask a question in the SB, just put a simple reminder like you already have to "Shoutbox is for random chatting only, not CoD related questions or thoughts."

Just want to bring the issue up again.

I prefer having the SB visible when i browse over topics and threads. Makes chatting more fun and i can react faster in case i post stuff in threads....
