Default No permission to post?

I was reading a thread that MikeMcD posted about how police had captured a hacker:
Private Investigators Capture Major Modern Warfare 2 Pirate

and then when i clicked on reply, this came up:

What the flip is with that? Surely i have privilages to reply on everything that is not locked, i'm not trying to edit someones post, not trying to access admin features or a privilaged system, i'm not awaiting activiation and i can't be banned as i posted this thread!

So what is with it?

You can't reply to things posted in the news section for some reason, even tho your allowed to post new threads there.

How stupid. The point of a forum is to post and discuss your point of view isn't it?

The point of the News Forums is to deliver undiluted News. By all means feel free to post the same topic in the appropriate discussion forum if you have an opinion to add.

Isn't that doubling up? Isn't it part of the mods job to delete, combine or lock a thread if it is a repeat? Wouldn't that be spamming if i made the same thread but in a different section?

I believe you're the one who who moaned about how stupid it was to have 4 seperate topics all on the same thing all on the go at once. This way:

Newsworthy News gets posted as news
All discussion thoughts comments stick to one discussion thread

Few small changes to Tweets & News subforums

Don't really get why you said that... that's wot i'm doing right now... ??

If a thread is made about something new and it is news, then we can reply to that and talk about it there. A new thread doesn't really need to be made to discuss that and if someone does make a new one then i think it should be deleted because can't we just talk about it in the thread already made about it?

Sorry for being a prick but i just don't really get it.

well that's the problem really. Everyone knows that but no one bothers looking before they post something.

Ideally we'd "autolock" news threads as opposed to disable perms, but that was the only way.

feel free to suggest an idea that is better for everyone. No need to go all hostile on us if we change something and you have a better idea...

abc, with all due respect, I think you should've just left that news forum alone. You're actually encouraging people not to read that forum if you're not allowing for replies in there - they have opinions. Telling them to "make a new thread or discussion" in the correct forum isn't going to do good. Mostly because the way the forums are laid out, it minimizes the need to "put it in the right place" - and on top of that, they might lose train of thought by the time they realize they can't post in that thread. This goes back to "discouraging discussion."

Having two different discussions of the same subject is going to make the forum seem like its wasting its server resources. This is part of the reason why Spamming is looked down upon. Remember?

Which is exactly why we have removed the permissions and set it up so that you can't have 2 identical discussions in two different areas of the site.

If we allow discussions and thoughts to be posted in the news item, what do you suggest we do? ban people from discussing it in any other forum?

As far as I'm concerned this has worked. During probably the most news-busy period (circa release date) we have had virtually no repeat topics. And no, this hasn't "worked" regarding "no repeat topics" in the same way that banning every user would create literally no repeat topics.

The implementation of platform specific tags has ironically, by making the forum less organised, created less repeat threads when it comes to news items. The community can deal with a news item with the actual news for people to comment "omg dis r make me pr0" and ONE other discussion for more detailed analysis. In light of this reverting back to how it was, since the introduction of tags, will probably work better than any arrangement thus far therefore it will be strongly considered.

Again as I have said all along you won't get banned for disliking something or having a better idea so, again, please do mention them.
